A new puppy, a pure-bred German Shepherd, was spotted Monday playing on the South Lawn of the White House. Michael LaRosa, Jill Biden's press secretary, confirmed the news of a new family puppy. "Yes. There is (a puppy)," LaRosa said. The puppy is named "Commander" and was a birthday gift to the President from his brother James Biden and sister-in-law Sara Biden, LaRosa told CNN. Biden celebrated his 79th birthday on November 20. The Bidens' beloved German Shepherd, Champ, died in June at the age of 13. Their other German Shepherd, a rescue named Major, has been living mostly in Wilmington, Delaware, after a handful of aggressive incidents involving staff at the White House. LaRosa told CNN that Major will continue to live away from the White House. I'm pretty sure I read he lives with one of Bidens grandkid and Delaware is less than 2hrs from DC and the Bidens go back there for the weekend a lot, so it's not like he's off living with strangers. But I suspect for most dogs-unless they are raised as a puppy-that adjusting to living in the White House with all the strangers would hard asf. I love big dogs I grew up with a great dane (that was taller than me ), then a black lab. There was one that tried to bite my face off when I walked past a truck he was in There must be a reason the police and military use that specific breed more often than others, I guess. Yeah it's usually sh*t owners: My bf and I got a German Shepard/Malinois mix pup a couple months back, and while I love him to bits and pieces he was a terror whenever we took him on walks!! It took months of training, positive reinforcement, and lots of mental and physical play for him to register people and other dogs as neutral stimuli at best. GSDs are incredibly intelligent, eager to please, and forgiving when it comes to training, so they're perfect as family pets. Every household I've visited with a GSD, the dogs were so well-behaved and total sweethearts. However, they have such a high drive that a lot of people are not capable of providing that for the breed, they just get them because they "look cool". That's how you end up with misbehaved GSDs unfortunately :-( End of the day, most GSDs were bred for a certain job so they will have more energy and drive than other breeds; that's why lot of owners need to work them physically and mentally so that they can be manageable!
