RAMROD 104,210
Sony is calling the opening weekend for Spider-Man: No Way Home at $253M, which is where we first saw it last night. Again, that’s the best December domestic opening, best ever for Sony, 3rd best ever among all films beating 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens domestic opening of $247.9M. It was easily the best domestic opening weekend turnout of any movie in pandemic times. Prior to this weekend, no other COVID-era film had been able to cross even $100 million in a single weekend. Worldwide Spider-Man: No Way Home owns the 3rd best global debut with $587.2M after Avengers: Endgame ($1.22 billion) and Avengers: Infinity War ($640.5M) and that’s without China. Here in the states, box office analytics firm EntTelligence reports that 20M people watched Spider-Man: No Way Home this weekend. Industry insiders believe it punctuates the reality that multiplexes have been — and will continue to be — more reliant than ever on big-budget spectacles, particularly of the superhero variety.
