Hard disagree on space travel but yeah, billionaires should at least be paying their taxes

Business wise, Elon leads a lot of important and worthwhile ventures. Electric cars, expanding internet access, space infrastructure, etc. He's just a severely sh*tty person and just as culpable as every other greedy asshole in how poorly our "socialism for the rich, rugged capitalism for everyone else" society runs these days.

Not yet. We have ways of cleaning up Earth's orbit anyway and any non-powered body's orbit would eventually degrade and cause it to burn up in the atmosphere

That whole "humanity's prison" thing is manageable and most space agencies are taking it seriously.

I think youre missing the point… Nothing we do literally matters if some asteroid or super volcano cancels 100% of humanity. Living in space might suck but it’d probably be better than an inhabitable earth. Projects like these are life insurance for humanity. The faster we get off the earth permanently, the better

A lot of ppl talk about it in a way tho as if its easier to survive on an alien world than a dying Earth, its not

 

Even most extreme scenarios like a super vulcano or asteroid... it would still be much easier to build air tight basis here on earth than on another planet. Like on another world u have to ive behind air tight steel walls to survive. We can literally build the exact same bases here with much more ease

 

I get that of course ppl would fight to get into those life boats in the event of a huge catastrophe but im just pointing out how in almost every scenario its still easier to survive here than anywhere else...

 

No matter how severe climate change gets or what asteroid impacts we get its unlikely to ever get as inhospitable on earth to humans as a place like Mars

The "back up planet" thing is a nice thought and Mars is the best choice for us considering how similar it is to Earth compared to literally anywhere else in the solar system, but honestly humanity wants to go to space just 'cause we can  That's why we settled on every continent, sailed every ocean, dove into the deepest trenches, landed on the moon, and sent robots everywhere else. Knowledge, exploration, discovery, it's our species' lifeblood tbh. It's just what we do.

The day we stop looking at things like Mars, Europa, Alpha Centauri, etc and saying "I want it" is the day we truly start our extinction countdown
