Evidence of Roman crucifixion found in UK

Near 1,900-year-old skeleton discovered with nail through heel bone during excavation in Fenstanton is the only instance of physical evidence of crucifixion in northern Europe

Aged 25 to 35 at the time of death, the man had been buried with his arms across his chest in a grave with a wooden structure, possibly a bier, at one of five cemeteries around a newly discovered Roman settlement at Fenstanton, between Roman Cambridge and Godmanchester.

The find is remarkable because it is highly unusual for the body of a crucifixion victim to be reclaimed, brought back to a settlement and buried alongside others.

The reasons behind this, the crucifixion and the identity of the man will never be known, but Romans are thought to have reserved crucifixion for condemned slaves, rebels and lower classes.

The find is the only instance of physical evidence of crucifixion in northern Europe and the fourth reported worldwide, two of which had no nails associated with them.

Tv shows/movies and frequent talk about what we believe (or know) happened in the past from evidence we find can give ppl a different perspective than reality

 

We know these happened, but we dont truly know exactly just how frequent they actually were with any certainty. Their frequency or threshold likely may have also have varied from one area to another

 

Theres also stuff thats worded or said in a way that gives ppl the wrong idea. For example ppl often believe the average person thousands of years ago died at 25 or 30 when in fact most ppl lived longer than that and that age group (when ur strongest and at ur prime) is probably when the fewest number of people died but high infant and child mortality affected the average way down. 

 

Most ppl would of died either before adulthood, or if they survived those critical childhood years, they probably lived until what we now call middle age at the very least. A typical person was not dying at 25 or 30, its an age range the fewest number of people would of died at if anything. But averages and statistics can also warp our perception in terms of what we imagine also

These finds prove they happened (which we already knew)... 

 

But i guess we dont know exactly how common they were, we only have bits and pieces of recorded history from anything furthet back than a few hundred years ago

 

Id suspect it probably wasnt something that occured very often as even if the bar is set low, ppl would avoid comiting what was considered crimes back then or at least try to hide them really well

 

Kind of like Saudi Arabia. Most of our population in the West would be executed or at least in prison if their standards applied here... But their population out of fear avoids certain things so it ends up being less common

 

I knew someone in school from there that told me even litering was rare cuz u could either get a suoer high fine or have ur hands boiled as punishment. Im not defending such harsh punishment of couse but simply pointing out fear makes the punishment rare to begin with as ppl will seek to avoid it
