The US needs to focus on the human rights violations in their own country first before acting high and mighty and boycotting other countries.

Just no. There is a massive difference between how the US violates human rights and how china does. More country's need to start standing up to china before its too late. The way there ppl are treated is absolutely horrible and they essentially live in a black mirror episode . To try and even say the US human rights violations are close to the same level is a joke. The US has WAY more freedom. Countries around the world desperately need to start boycotting and trading so much to them there much to powerful and there government is terrifying.

Well we all knew about Covid since about Mid-December. Any country‘s lack of an appropriate and timely reaction does not equal knowing about Covid months in advance. I‘m sorry that I misinterpreted your comment. You made it sound like it was a conspiracy, that everybody (China, the US) knew a bout Covid well before we all knew about it.

They U.S. knew about it since at least November. Which means China knew since at least then. If we're watching satellite images for information about an illness that means it was advancing at an alarming rate. What China did covering it up was shady to say the LEAST. And then they stifled numbers they were reporting a couple months into lockdown.

I hate to tell y’all delusional people who think US is rampant with human rights crimes right now, abortion laws and displacements that happened 100s of years ago can’t hold a candle to fully developed countries committing literal genocide, withholding information about the virus early on, and seriously censoring free speech and citizens’ lives.

Maybe move to the Middle East, Venezuela, North Korea, and yes, China, and then come back and say how scary and awful it is to live in America :ohwell:

And if you don’t think China’s at least partially responsible for how rampant COVID ran around the globe, then you’re just ignorant, close-minded, and stubborn ASF. The citizens are not responsible, the government is. Criticizing a government is more than acceptable, it sure happens enough here in the USA. So….

Mean Girls Shut Up GIF

Because one country is worse than another does not invalidate the issues that any country faces, first off. Secondly, they weren't looking to minimize China's in any way, just pointing out that the U.S. likes to act like they're great when they have their own set of human rights issues.

Did anybody say the violations are close to the same level? Like I said above, one country struggling more does not invalidate the struggles of lesser countries.

I mean, I hope nobody was truly expecting them to say "oh, okay, cool, see you next Olympics, friends!"    :huntyga:

I'm sorry but this is so weak. First of all the US is only boycotting their diplomates from going...American atheletes are still participating and that is what mostly matters so the US doing this "symbolic" move is really nothing. Second of all the US has displaced and killed far more Muslims in recent memory than China has (not saying one is better than the other but facts are facts) so for the US to act all high and mighty in regards to lives of a people most Americans dont even know about is really raising a lot of questions. This is all POLITICAL. The US does not care about Muslim lives...let alone Muslim Chinese / Uighur lives in Xinjiang. Smoke and mirrors as per usual.

Gosh I hate politics especially when they use legitimate issues to do virtue signaling.

No it doesn't invalidate another countries issues but claiming we cant really speak about there considerably more severe issues because of the US own is absolutely ridiculous. yes that's not exactly what they said but what that user said that certainly implies that.

Chinas government is a major threat to the world and its own people. It is an issue that is constantly swept under the rug and dismissed to talk about severely less important issues whilst the Chinese ppl suffer and the balance of world peace is slowly twisted as they become the world greatest military power which they basically are at this point. It is incredibly important that major democracies such as the US take action to show that china's actions are frowned upon by the free world.

Continuing to support this sort of behaviour by participating in there events and making them the worlds biggest trading partner is just showing them that they can continue there terrible actions and get away from it scott free without any political punishment. Saying things like the US cant really talk or shouldn't talk about it is dangerously naïve and ignorant considering the chinese people certainly cant say anything about it unless they want to be 2nd class citizens or completely vanish from society.

m8 its not even just about Muslim genocide as F2cked up as that is there is a lot more going on in china that the rest of the world needs to make them accountable for. The world needs to start politically punishing them because the whole world is fuelling there governments ego and giving them alot more power. Saying SOMTHING and taking any actions is better then nothing. I wouldn't consider it virtue signalling as the Chinese are clearly the bothered by it.

The point is the rest of the world needs to start puting them in there place and stop empowering them. That starts by calling them out on there sh1t and hopefully reducing the amount we trade with them. The fact is the US government as sh1tty as it is and the crappy things it has done at the very least doesn't treat its citizens anywhere near as cruelly as china does and that is a huge reflection on there values.

I agree that it should be talked about, and action should be taken. But the U.S. has less power over other's rights violations than its own. Yet it doesn't do much to help it's own people. Plus this is nothing but pandering to moderates. If they wanted to take action they would, in a variety of ways. Most obviously is increasing U.S. independence. But its citizens like cheap sh!t too much and so our products will continue to say "made in China". And even if the U.S. did plan to decrease imports, there's not enough infastructure to support it. So yes China's issues need to be addressed. But this is nothing but pretentious and does nothing but provide some lip service.

A little backstory for this: The Biden Adminstation does not want to have the US assocaited in any way with the human rights issues in China- Specifically the genocide of Muslims in the western region. Canada, Australia, Japan and others are also reconsidering their role in this olympics. China did not invite any government officials to the Olympics, except Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

How ironic, since the US fully supports Israel's apartheid and crimes against humanity in Palestine. The Biden administration and the US if full of sh*t in general, and as for the Chinese government - it is extremely hostile, and it is unsurprising Putin will be making his grand entrance. It's just that none of the governments involved/mentioned are a moral compass: they are all trash.

So basically half of you want to bitch about the US leading the way in starting some sort of accountability about China’s growing Human rights issues towards its on people, but if thE US does nothing, no one else will, and then you will bitch about that as well. The deflections of, well the US has done this or that, does nothing. There is a never ending hatred of anything the US does diplomatically on this site, due to the lack of critical thinking.

US: tries to do the right thing in spreading awareness on 1 issue.

gagadaily: The US  cant do anything right because of things the US has also done, so the US should do nothing.

Other Countries: not going to hold china accountable if the US doesn’t do it first.

The US is being held accountable by its own people. Infact, the country has never been in such cultural dissagreement as it is now. Even though that is frustrating, it is a sign of growth on the American part, by its own citizens. The citizens of China are not allowed to check their own government, and if the US doesnt do small things like this, then no one else will, and china will become more powerful internally.

Dude, no they’re not. Genocide is the massacring of an oppressed population. The United States is not doing that.

The United States is Israel's biggest enabler and loyal supporter, so yes, they are doing that.

If Kanye West tweeted 'protect trans individuals' does that mean that Kanye tweeted a valid point/important issue? Yes. Does that also mean that Kanye is still a controversial, disrespectful and problematic person? Yes. It's not just a black and white issue here, it's an entire spectrum.
