Kehlani opened up in an interview with Byrdie about embracing their non-binary identity.
"I don't mind when people say 'she' at all, but something feels really affirming when people say 'they,'" the singer, 26, told the outlet.
For Kehlani, using non-binary pronouns feels like an earned respect. "It feels like... you really see me."

Earlier this year, Kehlani came out as lesbian. However, rather than focus on the act of "coming out," the singer prefers to focus on the journey.
"I wish it was more of a journey discovering how I love and what I need versus putting the emphasis on having to 'come out' with my sexual identity," they told the outlet.

The singer-songwriter also opened up about their third album, titled Blue Water Road, set to release in early 2022, which "talks about love and coming into gayness."

I feel the same way, but I wasn’t able to find the right words to express myself. They’re a great role model for non-binary people.

I always love seeing people feel more comfortable in their skin. I’m glad Kehlani feels affirmed by them/they pronouns, and I will be switching to those when addressing them from now on!
