Is it? I’m curious what’s the basis behind this logic :oprah:

Let me first of all say that prison is an extremely unproductive, inefficient way of preventing crime. Only in a small percentage or criminality will a prison sentence improve society, if you consider that putting someone in prison for a year costs tens of thousands of dollars and that many people leave prison worse than they came in. Other types of punishment and social policies do way, way more to prevent crime. But there's two legitimate reasons to bring someone to prison, the first one being a sense of justice for the victims, and the second one being someone who due to mental illness or otherwise cannot function in normal society.

But those people shouldn't be imprisoned forever. Nobody acts the same way they did at 20 or 30 as they will at 70. I believe that the maximum prison sentence where I live is 30 years (which can be shortened to 20 years if the inmate shows good behaviour). Only for very special cases (i.e. a dangerous pedosexual rapist) there is the possibility of putting that person in a sort of psych ward aimed at reducing harm to society, which needs to be reassessed every two years before it is extended.

But every human deserves a fair second chance. A lifelong prison sentence is possible more painful than a death sentence. You're giving up on a human being, neglecting their humanity and their potential. Especially given the US focus on pure punishment rather than revalidation, I'd say a lifelong prison sentence is a crime against humanity. But if I may revise my initial point, I would say giving out a lifelong prison sentence is inhumane, but continuously extending an existing, temporary prison sentence to what may turn out to be a lifelong sentence is not, as that leaves open the possibility that someone will improve, while keeping the most dangerous people off the streets.

I get your point however isn't lifelong imprisonment only sentenced on criminals that committed heinous crime? And heinous crime can only be executed by mentally and morally deranged individuals? Like homicide is not life-long imprisonment whereas murder can be.

But I agree that a 70+ person can't do much anyway and can be paroled which exists in some countries, but for younger and abled body heinous criminals - I think they can still revert to their old ways. Si it's safer to keep them at bay.

No amount of medical equipment can read human thoughts. Unless its a severe mental illness that lapses hence more evident, a psychopath can still pass as your average person.  So while everyone deserves a second chance, but by the rule of the land (human law), the government should prioritize the safety of law abiding citizens.

In some states there's a "3-strike rule". There are people who have gotten life sentences for having an addiction to a substance.

This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

Sorry but there is no excuse for murder except maybe for self defense.

This guy belongs in jail for life as he made the choice to kill someone. Your decisions have consequences.

Not everyone grows up and decides to join a gang naturally. Its a choice to do that and its a choice to kill someone.
