In temples, churches, and private homes, mosaics illustrated scenes from mythology or boasted geometric motifs. Modern developers frequently encounter these floors when excavating in places such as Italy or Turkey. In 2010, workers encountered an especially impressive mosaic while digging the foundation for a new hotel in Antakya, Turkey. They found an ancient mosaic measuring 9,000 square feet, making it the largest intact mosaic ever excavated. The Antakya mosaic features intricate geometric and figural designs crafted from thousands of small stone tesserae. Scholars speculate it was once the floor of a large public building in ancient Antioch. The discovery of the ancient flooring beneath the hotel building site has resulted in a unique creation: a museum hotel. So cool they decided not to level the original floor and add to it, but leave it as it was found and give it space to shine. Bold move because covering it up, even with glass flooring would mean more floorspace and more profit to the owner of the building. Very beautfiful. It wasn't wavy back then, i think it got wavy because of erosion of foundations and lower layers of the floor over centuries. I'm not having fun tonight.
