During his appearance on Power 105.1's Breakfast Club  Ed Sheeran got candid about releasing his album before Adele's drops her highly anticipated project, "30". When asked why he's shook of the singer, Ed said:

"Would you not be? I think she sold something like 3.2 million. We all want a number one record. I didn't know she was coming with an album until we already announced our date. But then obviously after then I was like 'Thank **** we were before that'. [Adele] is the biggest artist in the world. So I'm not under any illusion that she's not a bigger artist."

To me, personally, she is a great vocalist, singer and songwriter but not an all-round artist.

An artist to me is like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, people who reinvent themselves time after time, put out art and visuals that support their album concepts, who define cultural moments, and specially who do a whole lot more than just sing a song on a chair every 7 years. No shade to Adele, I like her music.

He really is the most chart-obsessive singer next to taylor swift. Not only does he remember his own chart performance, he also keeps track of others' lmao.

That's exactly what I thought. Adele is too overated. Her new single could be good but by all the way It's still boring to me.

Came for some drama, not karma 💅

I’m not sure how that’s relevant. She’s an artist by definition, not by someone’s personal opinion. And what he said was true, she is one of the biggest most successful artists.

Isn't the point of an (internet) forum that one expresses their personal opinions?

He is SO obsessed with numbers. :saladga: It's like every interview he's talking about who the biggest artists are, what kind of numbers they're doing, what their standing is among musicians etc. He's like the Gretchen Weiners of him & Taylors little circle. It's like he's way too preoccupied with perception.

Yeah, but talking numbers, which he was in fact talking about, Adele is a BEAST, so your definition of an artist is irrelevant to the point he‘s making. Because she is in fact so big in numbers, no one can honestly compete. Truly a league of her own.

I never have and probably never will understand why this side of Ed always get  so many people to feel surprised or shocked... I mean, here 90% of the users are all about numbers, charts, records, prediction etc etc and Ed, who's a singer - so everything about music ( also including sales numbers ecc) is basically his JOB... well he's always  seen as a crazy obsessed person...

don't u think it would make more sense having him being involved in those stuff than any of us on gagadaily?

and, IMO, I find much more admirable a person who's in control & full acknowledge of what's happining in his career and in the music business in general rather than a puppet popstar who doesn't even know what's his/ her impact.

he wants success? I'm happy, because thanks to this side of him we got Shivers, who's catchier than a lot of flat song released by many female popstars in recent times. I wish Katy would go back to this love for POWER, we'd have another amazing pop album.  I think when you are pursuing something, even if it's for fame or money or power, quality-wise things are almost always better, and that's good for pop music lovers, innit?

THIS.

Every mainstream artist has those meetings, where those numbers are mentioned. Several times with every release. On this scale numbers matter, a lot, both yours and the ones „your competitors“ do. At least to set expectations and creating the best chance for a favorable outcome.  Present, past and future numbers matter.

At least Taylor and Ed are honest about the numbers based side of the industry, I never took it as „bling, not the music“ because being a major player for a major label means in the best outcome „music and the bling“.
