I don't know what "+" stands for but he once said that "x" meant that the album was "everything bigger than +"... This one, "=" (equals) has both pop and mellow songs. The article in the OP says about his next one: "My idea for 'Subtract' was to not have anything on it, just be an acoustic record."

Allegedly it was all part of a masterplan but
