Gaga said "my songs have to be shallow and deep at the same time" ppl dislike ARTPOP because they don't understand the sensibilities behind it. The thing is though, as clever as they may be (and they’re aren’t really as clever as they’re made out to be as they’re the same surface level critiques that industry has gotten for decades), they were sold in such a pretentious way that it’s hard to appreciate humor. The album may have been tongue in cheek, but she promoted it completely straight faced, she did not sell it as tongue in cheek or absurd, she sold it is a grand earth shaking artistic statement. How he described the album and what the album really was were so many miles apart that it’s impossible for many to know what they are and aren’t supposed to take seriously. It’s pretentiousness is difficult to swallow. And trust me, as a Madonna fan, I’m well used to recognizing pretentiousness when I see it HDKSMDM
Ronk 14,729
I never expect to like all the songs of any album. I love ARTPOP. Several of the songs are great, IMO. I think haters got their negative messages out early and swayed public opinion. It got off to a rocky start because of the change in release date. The promo planned for the original release date never fully happened for the new date. I live outside the space time continuum.
Fanta 5,019
Personal opinion: It's a bad album. There are some masterpieces on the album like Venus (one of her best songs ever) Sexxx Dreams, ARTPOP, but overall it is not good. However, when I 'rate' an album I rate both the music and the experience (visuals, videos, direction). I don't know if EDM/Electronic music is simply an outdated genre or if it was poorly executed on the album but save for a handful of songs the album did not age well. I also feel that there was too much going on at the same time: the album cover compared to the photoshoot (which had some amazing shots) was like visual pots and pans. Applause is overrated and not a good first single choice, but that's Interscope's fault. The ironic thing is Gaga is the queen of doing 'too much' but with sophistication and an elegance (even when said elegance is a big f*ck you to expectations), but it was poorly executed with the ARTPOP album and era. I don't necessarily blame Gaga for a lot of what went wrong with ARTPOP either, because we all know she was in a terrible mental state at the time on top of dealing with Interscope's (or was it manager's) BS. I think the album is a result of all those things. The way I view it is as a bad album with a few masterpieces sprinkled along the way. I genuinely still cannot get over the masterpiece that is Venus. I don't listen to it a lot, but when it plays on shuffle I practically belt out the lyrics and go into full (made up) choreo mode. Lucas 25,703
I only like half of the songs on it. Imo it's a very uncohesive album and on many songs Gaga's vocals are overproduced which make the music not so enjoyable for me! But I absolutely live for Aura, Venus, G.U.Y., ARTPOP, Swine, Donatella, Fashion!, Gypsy, Applause, those are the only songs from the album that I listen to

And trust me, as a Madonna fan, I’m well used to recognizing pretentiousness when I see it HDKSMDM Well, i disagree, lyrics like "Tailor these clothes to fit your guilt" i find not surface level critiques, but deep ones, it makes me think of how the fashion industry is really designed to make us ashamed of what we have, to create insecurities in us, we all dress ourselves depending on what type of insecurities we have, to hide and pretend instead of being proud of what we have learned are our "flaws", it's very thought provoking even on a daily basis for regular ppl like me, and she's singing this stuff all at the same time of being extremely absurd, snobby and owning the skinny blonde and rich bitch having a lot of fun, that's the magic, it's unique, it's camp spirited, and yet it's also serious, it's not just parody, it's more than that, you have to treat it like a professional body of work because it is. I really don't get why ppl say she was pretentious, everyone make fun of the reverse warholian expedition thing but it just means to put art in a suitcan and that's exactly what she did. she's a warhol fan, and ARTPOP wasn't the first time she touch these topics, it's a common theme since The Fame, and in a lot of ppls eyes he's a clown still anyway. She even said to those who believe she makes statements with everything she does, to chill out a bit because sometimes she's just driven by moves of passion in what she believes, she said it in her lyrics too. But none of the songs really show that. she literally brought an instrumental from an almost underground artsy experimental Trance/EDM band and put it in a pop album, how is not that art infiltrating pop culture? just among a lot of other examples. bambi96 1,555
I love the album, it's my first that I stanned Gags. But I will play the devil's advocate: the songs are over-produced, and some of the lyrics quite cheesy.
Summerboi14 807
I don't like this album that's why I think it's bad. Gaga can make better albums.
flyaway 15,350
I guess people expected something else. I thought ARTPOP would be a more experimental continuation of what was left with Born This Way, but she did a completely different record. I love ARTPOP for what it is, but I wish she would have done something else.
hijadeputa 3,858
I have listened to AP from now and then since it’s release in 2013 and it stills remains one of my favs and a personal album for me. I don’t care what you say

However, Aura's composition and structure is very experimental and I consider ha her most experimental bop (knowing Gagz bought its instrumental). Lyrically, on the otherhand, some tracks are experimental and unique nnn, see MJH, Aura, Venus, G.U.Y., Sexxx Dreams

JusKeepBreathin 19,311
It wasn't a flop or bad. It was just a little ordinary and forgetful EDM album at the end of EDM dominance then throw in a duet with a notorious sexual abuser and her foray into cultural appropriation and voila, ARTPOP. Even Gaga forgot it. "Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." -Martin Luther King Jr.
