When “Just Dance” came out I first saw the music video for it late at night, which was my intro to her music, and I remember thinking it was an old music video from like the early 80s. There was something so nostalgic about her very early days, she conveyed equal parts old school glam rock (Blondie, Grace Jones) and  2000s indie dance (Goldfrapp, Roisin Murphy). I wouldn’t call her 2008 persona “alternative”, it was too hard to categorize. Underground but accessible, if that makes sense. Some of my school friends thought she was a joke or media stunt lol. None of us knew her jazz, heavy metal, or Red and Blue folk-ish background till like early 2011 just before Born This Way.
