Horrible? Scream 4?

I loved Scream 4, probably a second after Scream 1.

Yeah idk, I'm a die hard fan and saw each movie (besides 4) in the theater. I just couldn't connect with #4. And the killer reveal, COME ON. The killer's body is SO much smaller than Ghostface throughout the whole movie lol. And I love the actor who played the killer, but it was a little "Jumped the shark" for me. It felt more like a parody of "Scream" like "Scary Movie" or something.

The 3rd one perfectly tied all the films together and is my personal fave.

But I respect your opinion

Y’all okay I’m pretty sure I have covid right now so I’m not going to see it for a while…. That being said, I’ve been following all leaks regarding this movie since before it was even announced in 2019. Like I want some spoilers but not all of them, you know?

so to anyone who’s seen the movie, please I’ll love you forever if you answer these questions in the first spoiler tag for me

  Reveal hidden contents

- is Samantha actually Billy Loomis’ daughter? :oprah:

- Amber is one of the killers, right? The last act happens at her house, so she’s the only one who would know the ins and outs of the house like Stu did in the first movie…. Right? Not to mention everything is kept entirely the same as it was back then…. Which isn’t creepy at all  so yeah she’s one of the killers, right?

- Does Dewey die? :bradley: I’ve already accepted his death because Sam doesn’t say “you want me to help you, a retired sheriff, and the host of a morning show commit murder?” She leaves him out and then there’s this image from promo

maxresdefault.jpg

- Does Randy’s sister make a cameo?

Answers to the first spoiler tag:

Spoiler

Yes to all four.

I liked it. A few unconnected thoughts:

Non-spoilery thoughts (promise there's no spoilers here, I just wanted to keep this post short):

Spoiler

Ghostface is brutal in this. I love it.

The film is a lot funnier than I expected! But it's not necessarily too... scary?

There's characters that survived that I didn't expect to, and vice versa. There's one character whose death I wasn't expecting to make me quite so sad - it's one of the best scenes in the franchise.

Pacing feels off to me. The last half-hour is SO fast compared to the slightly lagging middle section.

The motive of the killer(/s?) is flirting with the boundaries of credibility, but the acting definitely saves it.

It's so nice to see Neve Campbell again! I wish we got more of her, but I understand why we didn't.

I think you could enjoy this as a casual moviegoer, but it is definitely geared towards the fans (which I think might hurt its chances slightly?)

At times the film feels a little too clever for its own good. I know this is Scream, but the first film's self-conscious cleverness is paired with the confidence of knowing it's innovative, and even something like Scream 4 feels more naturally clever than this film. I’m not explaining this too well, I think it’s just a feeling you get whilst watching the movie.

Spoilery thoughts (LOTS OF SPOILERS HERE):

Spoiler

It’s a little worrying if they want Melissa Barrera to carry this franchise into potential sequels, because everybody (including me) is finding Jenna Ortega a much more impressive actor and Tara a much more fun character. She's the star. However, Sam’s portrayal in the final 10 minutes of the movie makes me intrigued to see where they would go for Scream 6.

Definitely needed a big chase scene and a couple of bigger set pieces. (Although there are a couple of great fake-out scenes that make up for it)

Now don’t get me wrong, Skeet Ulrich was hot in 1996 and I know he’s hot in 2022, but what this film teaches us is that 2022-Skeet-Ulrich-electronically-made-to-look-like-1996-Skeet-Ulrich is not hot.

The trailers were brave with how much they revealed.

Mindy being the new Randy makes me terrified for her chances of surviving Scream 6.

There’s a lot of subversion of gender roles here which I respected for its subtlety (Mindy being the Randy-style horror geek; a male character having a shower scene; Sam almost becoming her father at the end).

Thank god Stu did not come back. Hopefully this means people can finally stop trying to make that a thing.

Heather Matarazzo EATS her 30 seconds of screen time.

It’s difficult to rank these films, because they’re all trying to do very different things, and because the original is such a genuinely perfect film that it makes it difficult to think clearly about the sequels. Like, Scream 3 is objectively not a very good film (although it works better if you just imagine they were always trying to make an out-and-out comedy), but I absolutely love it every time I watch it. Scream 4 has a very good script but is awfully directed. If you put a knife to my throat, I’d say Scream 5 is hovering around 3rd or 4th place in the franchise. You can definitely feel the absence of Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven here, but in their place are two filmmakers who respect the source material and give it a nice update for 2022 whilst respecting the ethos of what’s gone before.

Lots to love, lots to criticise (as is the case with all the sequels). All in all I’d recommend it, and I think I’ll end up liking it more and more with rewatches.

Some easter eggs I found out that are not exactly spoilers but good info:

Spoiler

Sidney is married to a Mark person, most likely Mark Kincaid from Scream 3.

There's a quick look at someone's YouTube and one of the videos mentions an interview with SURVIVOR KIRBY.

Well, this new film is probably the closest the series got to going back to the original's feel. I'd say it was pretty well-made overall, you can tell that this was made by superfans and talented horror directors (I encourage you to see Ready or Not if you haven't, it's brilliant). The performances were also great, which isn't something one might expect from that type of film. Like others mentioned, it's also a brutal movie, which is something I feel got diluted a bit in the sequels. This one hurts lol

However.... I felt like the pace was really off. I appreciated the fact they took their time to establish a certain atmosphere during stalking sequences, but overall it goes on for so long and the structure of the film is pretty elusive. Which is a bit strange for a movie that self-proclaims its 3 act structure. You just don't really know where this is all going at points.

Also, unlike what the filmmakers are suggesting, I don't think this installment really stands on its own: it's very much a direct sequel to the first one, and I would recommend people to see at least this one to truly appreciate the numerous callbacks. I'm really not sure this film is that interesting if you have no knowledge of the series at all.

Spoiler

I was also a bit disappointed by the killers reveal. Didn't feel like a satisfying surprise to me, though it made sense I guess. But I liked the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood very obvious reference: once again, you can feel these directors enjoy their references, and they couldn't resist giving Mikey Madison a similar fate to the one Tarantino gave her character three years ago.

It looks really boring and tiresome. When you have seen one Scream film, you've seen all of them. All of them are revolving around the same idea (masked killer killing people) and it is getting really boring. This is not even the only horror film series using this idea but one of the many and the other horror film series like this are about as unoriginal.

I knew I had seen that somewhere. I haven't watched the movie since the time I went to theaters so didn't remember the hippie girl's face. If I were familiar with that I think I'd have been more suspicious of it.

Same! I'm glad I didn't clock it before because I felt like that would've put me on the track as well. But as soon as I saw her get hysteric in Scream, I had an epiphany. And it was definitely confirmed when she caught fire and ran around the house screaming :ladyhaha:

Anyone catch these Easter eggs?

Guys how do I make a spoiler tag?

[spoiler]/ Kirby is confirmed alive. She is in Dewey’s phone and there was a thumbnail on a YouTube thumbnail that said, "Interview with
Woodsboro survivor Kirby Reed"

Sid is likely married to Kincaid as her husband’s name is Mark.

Dewey had Tatum’s ashes on his mantle. \[spoiler]

Been a fan of the series since I was like 10 years old, I honestly felt that this was f*cking fantastic. The meta-commentary was SO FRESH and brilliantly done imo, the more I think about it the more I love it. Loved the twists. the deaths were B R U T A L. a total blast the whole way through. Loved the easter eggs for the fans but didn't feel like it was too pandering/fan-service-y at all.

This and the Fear Street trilogy give me so much hope for the slasher genre.
