”The disgraced R&B legend's music sales have jumped up 517 percent since a jury delivered a guilty verdict in the Kelly's federal sex crimes case on Sept. 27, according to Rolling Stone. The uptick hasn't just been music sales. The 54-year-old singer's on-demand audio streams are up 22 percent. His video streams have seen an increase as well, up 23 percent in comparison to the week before the guilty verdict was announced.”

I can only assume people are doing this for one of two reasons:
1. They think he is innocent and want to support him.
2. People who just like his music are buying it so they can continue to listen to it in the event that it is taken off streaming services.

And it's gonna skyrocket again when they upload Aaliyah's catalogue to streaming services. :partysick:

This is like when artists die. They're all over the news and people are like "Oh I haven't listened to him in a while" so they either purchase their music or stream it just because the name is on their mind again. After all, R. Kelly was the king of R&B years ago and people loved his music.

It's not surprising :laughga:

Michael had the biggest sales/streaming year since his death after Leaving Neverland came out (though I still maintain he's innocent and his accusers are full of sh*t but I'm not debating that here :huntyga:).

If your name is in the headlines, you're going to be making money and that's really all there is to it tbh. I don't think anyone believes R. Kelly is innocent but the guy made great music so of course he'll sell when his name is everywhere.

I think theres a 3rd one to add

Ppl that dont care either way and streamed it because the case made R Kelly come to their mind

Its not like he has current hits in high stream numbers. 500% may sound like a lot but if his current stream number base was very low it doesnt have to be a very high total increase to get a percentage increase like that

If i had 10 streams then next week 100 thats a 1000% increase (i know its not that low but u get the point)

I think people who didn't know him are just being curious about reading the news and gave him a listen. Of course there will be a few fanatics who belive in his innocence and will stream like crazy, but I wanna believe he will be completely out of the ranks in 2 weeks

I think it’s about time we’ve all realized there’s no such thing as cancelling someone. You’re just putting light back on a headline studded star. Regardless of the degree of controversy— attention and attraction will always perpetuate the source of the matter somehow.
