Dennis 8,391
Today history has been made in the Arab World, where women's rights are usually restricted. Tunisia becomes the first Arab country to have a female head of government. Progress can't be stopped, in any part of the world. It's bound to happen. Hopefully gender equality will continue to spread in the rest of the region. And I also hope that we'll see some progress on LGBT rights. With education and continued activism, that can happen too. LilyLark 10,213
Isn't Tunisia arguably the most liberal (in some ways) of the Maghreb & Arab world? I know abortion has been legal there-and not just for medical reasons-since the 1970s....and I believe women have far more freedom than in most other places in the region. However, they are still terrible when it comes to gay rights (pretty sure it's illegal to be gay there).

As much as Tunisia is liberal on pretty much everything, one thing still needs a lot of progress on: LGBT rights. LGBT organizations face state oppression. I think the government tried to sue one of them and failed in court etc.. I think progress is inevitable anyway. Remember even here in the U.S, homosexuality was still criminalized in Texas until 2003. So hopefully things will change on the LGBT front too.
