Electively declawing a cat is now illegal in Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA) passed the new bylaw during its annual general meeting.

In an emailed statement, the association said the bylaw was proposed by its membership. It then went to a vote, with the majority of the membership voting in favour of the ban, and passed.

According to the SVMA, the bylaw, which is already in effect, reads, “No member shall perform elective and non-therapeutic partial digital amputation of any felid including domestic cats.”

Sawa said a declaw is when the third bone and nail of a cat’s paw are removed, which she added is a painful procedure for the animal that can cause a number of side effects down the road.

I didn't even know they did that, that's atrocious :wtfga:

Just f*cking clip the nails of your cat - you elected to have a pet, it's your responsibility to take care of it properly, their health is not a place for you to take shortcuts...

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

Yesss! I hope it becomes illegal everywhere. This procedure is supposed to be like having your fingers removed and it's so cruel. I wouldn't dream of doing this to my cats.

Think instead of having your fingernails clipped or even more, pulled out, you get the last phalanx of all your fingers and toes amputated !

Barbaric and disgusting. Poor kitties. Should be illegal everywhere.

Late to the party but I got a diamond heart

Ew, I didn't know this was done to cats.

I never even clipped my cats nails because I was afraid if they ever got lost outside they'd be without one of their forms of defense.

I remember when I didn't know how horrible declawing was (I just knew it was bad) and didn't know declawing was illegal here, we left my cat at the vet and my mum told them to trim his claws, but she worded it as if they were gonna remove them. As I was walking away I was like 'wait are they gonna trim them or declaw them?' When we double checked with the vets they were horrified at the idea of declawing him.

Later when I learnt what it was exactly and that it was illegal I was like 'ohhh THAT'S why they reacted like that' :toofunny:

Do you feel him sir?

This, we even had loose-fit collars incase they ever got caught on a bush or something, that way they wouldn't be trapped there

This kitten over here (meow)

Wait, it’s illegal in 8 provinces but not where we are? :partysick:

For once Ontario is behind in the times.

no, it's still legal here :bradley: though many (good) vets refuse to do it anyway

the first province to make it illegal was Nova Scotia in 2017, so hopefully we'll all get there soon!

The other eight provinces are British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and Newfoundland and Labrador. Ontario and Quebeque should better be next :legend:
