They're not progressive, they're literally capitalist anarchists.  They are pretty EXTREME in their hooray-capitalist, pseudo-Republican fiscal and economic policies. Sure, they are pro LGBTQ+, but I'd argue that the Greens are the party with the most pro LGBTQ+ stances. That doesn't change the fact that their economic and fiscal policies than ran with this year only really benefit very rich people, while not doing anything for that actual economic middle and lower class of Germany. 

The FDP's social political platform is supposed to be about individual freedom and the civil rights of the individual, but in recent years the continuously failed to recognize that freedom comes with responsibilities. Like solidarity to your community. And this lingering theme of lack of responsibility and glorified individual egoism has made the party drift from center to centre-right/almost right-wing populist.

They adopted several popular right-wing talking points under the guise of "liberalism". Mask-mandates in the covid pandemic are seen as "illiberal". Violent anti-vaxxers are commended by the FDP for "excercising their right to decide what goes into their body and what does not", as if anti-vaxxers aren't the only reason this country can't return to normalcy. As if anti-vaxxers aren't costing the entirety of Germany millions of Euros in lost revenues/paid for covid-tests. I could continue but the post would be another 4 paragraphs longer. 

I don't think what the FDP claims to be and what the FDP actually is, is really congruent. As of now... they're CDU/CSU 2.0, just with less corruptions scandals because they not had any larger political power in over 10 years.

More than 30% of Gen Z in the East has voted for AfD in the simultaneous school parliement elections. The AfD normalized openly lived out right-wing extremism in the East. With them being around for almost 10 years now, I think we should finally stop explaining these votes as people "protesting" against the establishment.

I think this all is a problem of "political view inheritance". Many people in the east, especially in rural areas, often have a large offspring and are the ones not being that well educated (to put it lightly). So, if parents of such households have such a twisted view on politics, the kids inevitably think the same (given that they don't have access to research resources - which is not unlikely "auf dem Land" ). So as soon as they're able to vote, they most likely choose the same party their parents vote(d) for.

And so, this becomes a problem of multiple generations and the right shift in politics keeps getting worse. So a good education system and digital infrastructure is needed to let these kids grow their own opinion.
