Elon Musk has declined to comment on Texas' restrictive new abortion law after Governor Greg Abbott said that the tech mogul supported the state's 'social policies.'

Abbott appeared on CNBC and insisted that companies would not quit the state over the controversial new law - which bans abortions once a heart beat can be detected, typically around six weeks. Greg Abbott said:
"“You need to understand that there’s a lot of businesses and a lot of Americans who like the social positions that the state of Texas is taking. This is not slowing down businesses coming to the state of Texas at all. In fact it is accelerating the process of businesses coming to Texas"
He added " Elon had to get out of California because in part of the social policies in California. Elon consistently tells me that he likes the social policies in the state of Texas."

The Tesla  CEO,  who moved from California to Texas last year,  later tweeted a response to a clip of the interview, but stopped short of commenting directly on the law.
Musk tweeted: "In general, I believe government should rarely impose its will upon the people, and, when doing so, should aspire to maximize their cumulative happiness. That said, I would prefer to stay out of politics."

He has historically shown little reluctance to weigh in on political issues. For example, in early 2020, amid early waves of the coronavirus pandemic, Musk lashed out at government stay-at-home orders. Under his direction, Tesla then filed and eventually withdrew a lawsuit against California’s Alameda County.
