Olivia Rodrigo once believed only white girls could be pop stars

I didn't know she was not white. As a European, it's weird to see how Americans put themselves in boxes and perceive themselves as part of groups. I'm Portuguese, and our Prime Minister is half Indian or something. Do you think when he won the elections, the newspapers were like "first non-white Prime Minister ever in Portugal"? No, we don't care. It's just another Portuguese guy.

Anyway, it's a good thing for her fans to feel seen when they look at her. We can only be what we see.

i understand that. Beyonce and Rih were labelled as RnB despite releasing pop music for years! The industry presented "popgirl = white girl" for AGES up until more recently.

Yup it doesn’t. But I think she looks extremely Caucasian and pretty at the same time so I can’t help but feel cynical at her comments tho

Girl…..she does not look extremely Caucasian :laughga:

Honestly i get where she is coming from….. and i think award shows would make this problem visible because a black girl could make a whole pop record and then get nominated in a r&b or urban category :saladga:

I think she means how the industry has made "Pop music" women be the blonde model like Britney, Gaga, Katy, Kesha, etc. while artists like Mariah, Beyoncé and Rihanna get the "R&B/Urban" label even though they DO make pop music.

Relatable struggle tbh.

It is hard for PoC especially the Asian diaspora to break into showbiz in the West.

As far as USA concerned, there isn't much systems that will defended them and their rights. The African American and LatAms have at least a few of those and plenty super famous stars from this community also. While Asians? It is hard for Asian kids growing up to find someone to look up to that look like them. Like, how many famous Hollywood stars before 2010s are  Asians or Half Asians? Pretty sure we can probably count them with fingers, there was Lucy Liu, Jamie Chung, Jet Lee, Jackie Chan, Kelly Hu, Ming Na Wen, Margaret Cho, Anna May Wong, Michelle Branch, Norah Jones, Ziyi Zhang, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, and well..., again, Lucy Liu.

So yeah. Y'all who are being messy here need to understand her standpoint. Especially if y'all are white.
