NewUsername 11,483
It's actually just this: King of Pop: MJ Queen of Pop: Madonna Princess of Pop: Britney Those are like the 'original' names and I think we should 'keep' it like that, doesn't mean that other extremely talented and/or impactful artists aren't kings/queens/prince(s)(ses) of their own or like 'the new ones'. It's like The Voice: Whitney, The Boss: Bruce Springsteen, these are almost 'official' nicknames.

Ziggy 12,003
I def agree on rap. There’s SO many variables that it’s hard to put formal rankings like this in place. Now, pop is easier because it is literally meant to be homogenous, singular, and simple in its makeup

A great example is erotica. No commercial pop female was putting their sexuality on such a display in such an upfront manner before that. Sure, others set her up to do that, but she took that inch they gave her and took a yard. It’s stuff like that. If you mean musically, well shes tried just about every genre in some capacity so there’s that lmao but if I look at Ray of Light or Confessions, she basically ushered dance music into the mainstream not unlike Ms. Gaga herself would decades later. Legacies are complicated. Would RoL have happened without someone like Björk releasing Homogenic only a year prior and bringing more “eastern” influence into her music? Would she have done it without someone else trying it? Or someone before them? My point is one person’s actions beget another’s but in the case of Madonna, it’s important to acknowledge very much that she’s a commercial artist. Within the parameters of commercial pop, she was an innovator.

Exactly. Nobody cared that much before the last year (besides her stans) Its so strange to see people just be sheep and jump on the bandwagon claiming she's the queen of pop. People can hate me all they want but at her peak Britney was a great dancer who looked like the perfect not too threatening pop star who lipsynced most of her performances bc she can't sing. AFAIK she didn't write her songs. I know she has been hampered by personal problems but either way she had her peak in the 90s. She is as famous for her personal problems as for her music. As for Madonna.. Somebody already posted a link. As much as I dislike Madge's attitude towards younger artists I will never deny her impact. Imo a lot of her hits are superior to Britney's (Toxic slaps though) 😇
