Michigan parents owe son $30k for tossing out prized adult film collection

A pair of Michigan parents that trashed thousands of dollars worth of p*rn*graphic materials and s*x toys must compensate their 42-year-old son for the destruction of his massive collection, a judge has ruled.

A judge has ordered a western Michigan couple to pay $30,441 to their son for getting rid of his ****ography collection.

David Werking last year filed a lawsuit against his parents, Paul and Beth Werking, after they tossed his trove of adult DVDs, VHS tapes, magazines and s*x toys, MLive reported. He moved in with the couple following his divorce and lived in their Grand Haven home rent-free until August 2017, when he moved out “at the request of local law enforcement.”

Over the course of the next few months, his parents worked to return the possessions he’d left behind. But when Werking inquired about his missing stash of s*xual materials and toys, his father in an email said he and his wife had gotten rid of it all.

I watch a lot of Judge Judy, and so reading this is just another “you have no right to throw away somebody’s property” case and he was rightfully compensated, but the whole thing is just weird

Yeah but if you’ve left it there since 2017 doesn’t that give the right to the home owner to clear away anything left behind?

If I'm understanding the article correctly: he lived with them, was forced to leave, (probably wasn't allowed to return to get his things) and the parents started boxing his things. As the parents were packing things up, they found the stash, and said in the email that they "immediately" started destroying it. So, they didn't wait, they didn't consult him, they didn't give him a chance to claim the items. That they admitted this in an email is probably the legal reason he is entitled to reimbursement. It also seems like this sequence of events took place in a relatively short timespan, and its only now being resolved in the court.

Any collections are matter to individuals who collected it. Whatever that is. His parents could have asked first. It might seems useless and just pr0n items to them, but it means differently to their son. So this lawsuit is pretty much OK since it seems he felt such a loss from it.
