FfFfFfFF 58,144 Posted August 27, 2021 Share Posted August 27, 2021 Egyptian researchers on Wednesday announced the discovery of a species of semi-aquatic whale with legs, which lived 43 million years ago. The discovery was made by a team of palaeontologists at Mansoura University who spent more than a decade studying the fossils before publishing their findings in a Royal Society journal. The new species was named Phiomicetus Anubis after the ancient Egyptian god of death. Weighing an estimated 600kg and three metres (10ft) in length, the Phiomicetus anubis had strong jaws to catch prey. The whale was able to walk on land and swim in water. While this is not the first time the fossil of a whale with legs has been found, the Phiomicetus anubis is believed to be the earliest type of semi-aquatic whale to be discovered in Africa.
