Per Diet Prada:

Recently, Instagram lit up with a flurry of comments on a post comparing a Givenchy look by Matthew Williams to the work of Benjamin Cho, the mercurial Korean American fashion designer and downtown darling of the early aughts who passed away in 2017. @AthenaCurrey, a former Ford model and best friend of Cho’s, led the charge, putting Williams on blast and demanding he give credit.

For those close to Cho, the sinewy braided silk cords of Williams’ Givenchy dress immediately recalled their friend’s work. Comments trickled in, ranging in tone from sentimental to savage. “You were then, as you are now, @matthewmwilliams, a toxic sociopath without morals and scruples,” read one from a private user.

Cho would spend his nights DJing, partying with the likes of Chloë Sevigny, Ryan McGinley, and Dash Snow, while devoting his days to handcrafting one-of-a-kind couture to critical acclaim. On top of numerous Vogue accolades, New York Magazine named him as an up-and-comer who would “give the big-league labels a run for their money.”

In a subsequent post, Currey, who modeled in all but one of Cho’s fashion shows, made a pointed effort to draw attention to the relationship between her friend and Williams. “I am including pictures of them because it is important you know they knew each other,” the caption read. “There is no faceless intern pulling images as someone assumed.”

I know Diet Prada can be annoying sometimes, but after looking at the designs, this is tea. 👀  It sounds like he basically took the braided techniques Benjamin Cho had used and implemented it into his Givenchy collection, yet never mentioned him until now. BoF said Matthew Willams went back to an old post featuring a black braided dress and only just now edited it to mention Benjamin Cho. Mess.

Also, I read an old unauthorized bio of Gaga (Poker Face: The Rise & Rise of Lady Gaga), and while I took everything with a huge grain of salt, the author did talk to some friends of Benjamin Cho and they highkey implied Matthew was a clout chasing opportunist. :deadbanana:

Looks the same to me. Although the Givenchy looks more finished and expensive.

But Mathew should not have all the credit for creating that look. He can have credit for updating that look tho.

That is one of the few comparison posts from them where it is 100% obvious that he took inspiration if not out right copying and didn't credit the original artist. I love Matthew and he was obviously magical with Gaga but I have also read things that made me question him. Probably a blessing their time together was short lived or it had something to do with it.

Edit: annnddd now they've posted this cringe clip with gaga ofc:

Is that book any good? I've read bits of an unauthorised book available online, not sure if it's the same one.

Yeah, there's some differences here & there, but I think if he had just mentioned his inspiration from the beginning he wouldn't be in hot water. Also makes it worse it's a designer that's deceased.

lol they're messy for that.

I feel like he tempered her glittery tastes with his high fashion, sleek taste, & sprinkled with his rolodex/connections, it resulted in some great fashion moments. It's so romantic in an artistic sense that they would brainstorm and research together, and he'd make props for her and help their ~dreams come to life. But yeah, IA, from what I've read, he does seem a bit shady in some aspects and was probably a terrible boyfriend (remebering him leaving his baby mama for her, then leaving her for his baby mama, then back again :madge:).

It was interesting in a gossipy sort of way (I think the author used to work for Page Six or something like that). However, I really didn't like the way the author framed her - and not even just bias as a fan - I mean, I can handle truths about Gaga and I'm not a worshipping type of "Gaga can do no wrong and is a SAINT" stan). They wrote about her like she was a veteran who was supposed to know everything about art and be 100% cultured instead of taking into consideration that they were writing about a 22-year old whose knowledge and taste was still forming as she was becoming famous. If you can get past that it's ok. Also, they got some interesting and important tidbits in, like R*b F*sari creepily coercing her into a emotionally abusive relationship, but it's weirdly written about in a non-chalant way. It's definitely of-its-time (pre #MeToo, and in the tabloid culture times).
