Photographer Eric J. Smith has a knack for putting himself in the right place at the right time. His photo of a mother whale popping her head above water, while the whale-watchers remain blissfully unaware of what's next to them, has become a viral sensation.

“Happy accidents are rare, but I try to put myself in scenarios where they are much likelier to occur,” he shares. “I also make it a point to have a good camera with me at all times, because you never know when you’ll see something amazing.”

In 2015, his image of a man looking at his cell phone while an enormous whale rises from the water was his first experience with viral success.

The worst that could happen is that you'll be swallowed by the whale (depending on what species is), but you will likely be spit out, which is actually what happened to a man a few months ago: https://www.livescience.com/fisherman-swallowed-by-humpback.html. Not sure if it makes it better or worse though..

absolutely love that underwater shot of the whale. It looks almost human :enigma:. Not literally obv, but more like because it has so many stories to tell.

Don't be afraid with whale, y'all. They don't eat people.

A humpback's throat is roughly the size of a human fist, and can only stretch to about 15 inches in diameter to accommodate a bigger meal.

While blue whale also can't swallow large prey because their throat is tiny in comparison – only 4 to 8 inches in diameter
