US targeted BLM activists in bid to disrupt BLM movement

The federal government deliberately targeted Black Lives Matter protesters via heavy-handed criminal prosecutions in an attempt to disrupt and discourage the global movement that swept the nation and beyond last summer after the Minneapolis police killed George Floyd, according to a new report.

 

Movement leaders and experts said the prosecution of protesters over the past year continued a century-long practice by the federal government, rooted in structural racism, to suppress Black social movements via the use of surveillance tactics and other mechanisms.

 

The report was released by the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition of more than 50 activism and advocacy civil rights groups and professional associations representing Black communities and published in partnership with the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability and Responsibility (Clear) clinic at City University of New York (Cuny) School of Law.

 

“The empirical data and findings in this report largely corroborate what Black organizers have long known intellectually, intuitively, and from lived experience about the federal government’s disparate policing and prosecution of racial justice protests and related activity,” the report stated.

Trump was open with his opposition to the protests, I thought it was quite obvious they would’ve enforced harsh prosecutions against protesters. The way him and his administration handled the protests was one of the reasons he lost the election.

This sort of misses the point thought. Like yes you're correct, but it's not just Trump. Every single administration has been doing this to block and disrupt Black and other minority social movements for the last century,and my guess is will continue to do so even under a Biden administration.

You can thank the FBI and CIA whose job it is to target these movements and meanwhile allow white supremacy movements to flourish.

Oh, I guess I shouldn’t have just read the title and first sentence. I guess it’s not surprising that even if we have people of color in the White House this continues to happen. Power and wealth seems to always be the true unifier in our politics, though I am curious to see how a Biden administration would react to similar situations.

We been knew the CIA and FBI act separately from the President almost all of the time. The root cause for this particular instance is systemic racism, but don't be mistaken, because the root cause of it all is capital. White supremacism is very related to the sense of "American freedom" every American is manipulated into having, in a bigger or smaller scale, which of course includes capital (and I would argue capital is the biggest element in it), because it's one of the mechanisms that support the status quo of "American exceptionalism", which doesn't allow for any major change to happen in order to not disrupt "God-given" exceptionalism of the US. This can also be attributed to the constant wars the US engages in and the philosophy of the white man's burden, which is also - surprise surprise - rooted in the desire to accumulate capital.

Exactly. This is unsurprising coming from an admin that: collected dossiers on activists in Portland trying to tie them to ISIS, sought to pursue sedition charges against protestors and the mayors of Seattle and Portland, and wanted the US military to open fire on BLM protestors in DC

Yes, this is so true. Very good points. They do act separately from whoever is in office and are only about upholding the system which includes systemic racism and white supremacy. Hence why they don't target or mess with white supremacists and allow them to roam free basically, and work in tandem with police departments around the country to do all of this as well.
