I keep hearing from some people around me how we can’t let people live off the system and we have to encourage them to work. The whole BS of that the government shouldn’t be providing for us. I get so pissed because it’s like, sure, $15 an hour at a retailer—but how many hours a week do they get? Certainly not 40! This is why people have multiple jobs. And the hustle culture is disgustingly glamorized. And what about healthcare being tied to a job; and not just a human right? I do not think many philosophers and social scientists were off the mark with their predictions like Marx or Weber. Or the whole “rugged individualism” of the US. “Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps.” It’s so pervasive here—I feel like I can’t critique it to friends or loved ones without getting shamed for believing in quality work and care for our citizens. On Reddit, subs like “anti work” and “late stage capitalism” are great to find camaraderie. As George Carlin once said, it’s called the American dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it.
