First Marburg Virus Death in West Africa

The Marburg virus belongs to the same family as Ebola, and previously outbreaks have erupted elsewhere across Africa in Angola, Congo, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda.

 

Marburg symptoms include high fever and muscle pains, and some patients later bleed through body openings like eyes and ears. There is no approved drug or vaccine for Marburg, but rehydration and other supportive care can improve a patient’s chances of survival.

There are viruses all the time, this is fearmongering by the media. Not all of them become a pandemic

That‘s true. Though it‘s important to report on these things. I work at one of the big three German broadcasting companies and we had an intense discussion this morning, whether to report on it intensively, only moderately, or not at all.

Whatever you do, don't add more anxiety to the public on what you cover and report. For example, I wouldnt cover this on the news, I would put it in tiny letters underneath (if you're doing tv), for a couple hours and move on.

WHO said while it is a contagious and deadly virus it's more of a national threat than a global one. Previous outbreaks have been able to be contained to a smaller number of people which hopefully will be the same for this one.

That's not a very good idea tho.

Imagine living in West Africa and this gets under reported just cuz the story is scary. Thats just plain irresponsible and selfish.

That’s the thing though. The media is selective about what they cover because they base it on what will get attention. Since we are in a pandemic, fearmongering gets attention.

If we weren’t in a pandemic, we would not be talking about it, because western media wouldn’t care.

And the only reason COVID became as big as it did was tbh because of Trump not leading the charge a bit more like Obama did with Ebola.

It‘s a really delicate issue. I don‘t really know what we decided on, but it wasn‘t covered during my shift. I guess it got passed down to the ethics and science people. They are usually the ones who kind of unfold the delicate news and make them digestable, if that makes sense?
