Wixson 5,004
Since you've mentioned Erick Weber, has anyone seen his misogynistic and biased tweets pointed at Gaga? People called him out on Twitter after talking **** about House of Gucci and he deleted them in a heartbeat, limited who can reply to his new tweets and started blocking fans left and right. He's a piece of ****.

He's a piece of ****. I saw it and it’s gross. At the same time I don’t think now is the time to start cancelling critics left and right when we’re trying to get them to say nice things about Gaga. Fans just started harrassing all over the HoG hashtag, no way that guy gives a good fair review anymore edit: screw that guy though, promoting anti vaccine stuff, half his recent likes are anti vax propaganda and the others are comments shitting on HoG. This idiot just wants Last Duel to get the nominations for Ridley over this and it’s so clearly sabotage

He's an anti-vaxxer and problematic as hell, but he's not trying to sabotage the film. Just cause a critic may prefer one film to another doesn't mean they are going to go out of there way to trash a film...monsters need to chill the f*ck out with this because while I highly doubt harassment would change their review for the most part...if they are borderline on Gaga's performance it might tip them one way. Plus, as someone pointed out on twitter it could result in a Rami Malek situation (a lot of critics are mean as h*ll about him on social media). TLDR: 95% of critics are fine (some are a bit elitist, but they are generally fine). 5% are problematic asf, but Gaga fans going after them is not going to help Gaga...might even hurt her. I think what I predict happening is this gets a very lukewarm reaction from critics (65-70% on RT) but Gaga still gets awards buzz for her dedicated performance. So I did some snooping on film twitter/sites.... 1) Gregory Ellwood implied in his replies that Ridley Scott is only doing a lot of work for Gucci because he wants it to "open." However, I'm kind of questioning that as Ridley's hardly a selling point with the public. Moreover, Q & A screenings that aren't open to the GP are hardly a way to "sell" the film. Talk show appearances, interviews with major outlets, etc. are what I would expect from artists who are trying to sell a movie...which, tbf, Gaga and Adam are doing. Ellwood also has disagreed with most critics this season (which he's said on twitter). 2) David Poland (I sort of rank him with WOR, etc. as not particularly reliable, but MCN did use to break some news back in the day)...said on his substack that Gucci is decent, that Adam is the worst of the cast, and that Gaga will get nominated and might even win. However, he's also the only critic insisting Kristen Stewart won't win (pretty much everyone else thinks she's the frontrunner, or at least has a decent shot at winning). 3) Licorice Pizza allegedly has a social embargo that lifts on Thursday and the rest on the 22nd (like HOG). It also opens on the 26th (I'm guessing as a specialty release/counter programming to HOG). I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up like you predicted or something close to it: mixed to positive, but with Gaga getting a golden globe nom (and possible an Oscar nom) and Jared Leto also getting nominated. I still stand by what i said. this critic or whoever he is has a history of bad-mouthing gaga, he literally just deleted his negative tweets about her so please don't automatically assume I'm being biased because i'm a Gaga fan. I literally saw the receipts myself and I think they're also posted on Goldderby. I'm an avid award season watcher and I understand how some of these critics work setting up certain narratives in hope a particular film fails/succeeds. It happens every year. Also I'm not another fan going after "him", all I'm saying is we should be weary about what he says and engaging with him as that will just lead to more negativity. Fair enough, and you are correct that certain critics do try to set up a narrative (e.g. the relentless criticism of Jared & Rami...I'm not even really a fan of either but it's absurd). I just feel like it's mostly on social media versus what is actually published. At least that dude isn't a big deal, though.

It's just the vibe I'm getting. We haven't heard anything that would warrant us to believe it will be panned. If a lot of critics shrug at it, with many also liking it, that would warrant a reaction in the 65-70% range. I frankly don't expect acclaim, but I DON'T expect a panned reaction either. The cast is too great and the story too interesting.
LilyLark 10,107
@mamo@ConnorFilm Did y'all hear the (slight) buzz about Licorice Pizza? Among the positive stuff floating around...I've seen several people remark there's something problematic (possibly even a deal breaker) about the film. I guess we'll have to wait until the embargo lifts, but I'm curious. The only things I can think of are: A) The film ignores the fact that Jon Peters sexually harassed a ton of women. From the trailer (granted, it's just the trailer), it seems like Bradley Cooper is playing him as sort of an arrogant jackass but not a monster. B) The age gap. Alana's what...29/30...and Cooper Hoffman's all of 18 and apparently playing a 15 year old. She says something like "do you think it's weird I hang around Gary and his 15 year old friends all the time" in the trailer...which, imo, implies she's playing older (just how much older is the question).
