The second is that the performance wasn't a tanning salon nor the dancer was a teenage girl getting a bad spray tan and going through a "rite of passage". It was a nationally broadcasted performance. If it's really true that it was inspired by 80s tacky fashion and overdone tan, then it's a very bad look too. You can't risk this being taken the wrong way, as it apparently has (according to Camila, unreliable narrator), but nevertheless someone chose to go ahead with that makeup. If you want to create a homage to the 80s, please leave the problematic stuff out, or accentuate it in another way (like an orange tan for example). Wiould you defend someone dressed in 80s fashion screaming the F slur by saying "well, to be fair, he's just honoring the 80s..."? What? Bad tan in the 80s was not meant to be blackface. My point was that tanning is meant to make you darker/healthier, but was never intended to impersonate a black person. Both in the 80s and now. Tanning in the 80s was not problematic. It doesnt need to be defended. It is not a problematic thing that needs to be left out lol. I agree it could definitely have been more exaggerated, and as the BTS photo showed the stage lighting made it a lot darker than it was. But idk why you're acting like spray tans are the same as blackface when you know it's a totally unrelated thing.

Honestly I'm just in shock that her PR team even let this happen. Fire everyone! Apology for? Her backup dancers post? Her makeup artist's use of bronzer? I'm genuinely confused what she would apologize for. She was probably, idk, more focused on remembering the choreo and lyrics to her new song, what camera to look at and when, why she did a non-Disney version of Cinderella

No, she hasn’t changed. I already said it, her dancer already showed everyone that he was trying to look black. Look on Page 1. Camilla’s “apology” proves she hasn’t changed. Did you read my comment or did you write your own fanfiction? I don't care if tanning in the 80s wasn't problematic. I don't care if it isn't problematic now, it isn't, but my point is that there's a reasonable argument to be made that it isn't morally correct to create such a "character" if you know (and someone must've known) that it would be confused with blackface, especially in the context of the performance. I don't care about the original intent, I care about how it comes across. This was an official message from the Office of the First Lady.
