Racist Attacks To England POC Players After Failing Penalty Kicks On Euro

England’s defeat on penalty kicks in the final of the European soccer cup caused a barrage of online racist attacks against Black players who missed goals in the shootout. 

England was the favorite at the start of the game, as it was playing at home in front of tens of thousands of fans, and fans were convinced the team would manage to bring the cup home for the first time. Italians were hoping the cup would return to Rome after 53 years.

In the end, Italy won the shootout 3-2 when three of England’s Black players missed their spot-kicks. A barrage of racist attacks on social media followed, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka were viciously targeted by trolls and angry England fans after the defeat at London’s Wembley Stadium. The team lost, 3-2, to Italy in a penalty shootout in which all three players missed their shots.

A wave of online abuse soon followed, with monkey and banana emoji and racist comments posted underneath photographs of the players on their personal Instagram accounts, which led England’s Football Association to release a statement Monday morning condemning the racist abuse of its players.

The statement said, “the FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media."

It added that “anyone behind such disgusting behavior is not welcome in following the team.”

London police have opened an investigation. Twitter, for its part, said it has taken down more than 1,000 tweets and suspended several accounts used to post racist abuse directed at the England players.

What is wrong with English people.. I know football fans get rowdy but I don't know any other team that descends to such depths every single time. They ruin everything

The ironic part is, these same people were probably supporting them up until the penalty losses. The worst I heard was some people saying that they deliberately missed those goals as a way to punish the fans and the UK public at large, for being racist. That is how absurd the thinking is. Yeah, I'm sure they stayed in the profession, helped out in gaining goals during match time and just narrowly missed their penalties by a whisker if that was their agenda. There is no downside to scoring a goal, they knew it would make them national heroes. Every kind of minority will tell you that the best way to acceptance is to play along, assimilate, be useful and helpful, be the model minority. Doing stuff that goes against what the ruling forces want will just make things worse for you. Every black player will know how much it would help them to score the match winning goal. To do the opposite is nonsensical of the highest order. Some people will just invent reasons to be hateful and it's a shame that this is the image being reflected on an entire group of fans. As a Scottish person, I will say that the England fan association and English flag association with the far right is very damaging and really sours the sport.

It's terrible behaviour and it's sadly predictable,  but I would like to introduce a note of positivity by saying a few things about the three guys who are the victims of the abuse.

Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho are three superb footballers. They play at the highest level of a game which is the most popular on the planet. It would be difficult to overstate the amount of talent, dedication and discipline needed to achieve what they have already achieved in their young lives. They are wealthy. They receive huge salaries, and barring injury they will continue to do so for at least another ten years. They and their families will want for nothing. As people, they operate at a vastly higher level than the idiots who abuse them online. We hear a lot of talk about 'elites' these days. These three guys are genuinely elite.

If you're not familiar with Marcus Rashford, look him up on wiki, and I do him a disservice because his full title is Marcus Rashford MBE. An MBE is a title awarded by the Queen for distinguished service. The guy is only 23 and he's got an award from the Queen, and it has nothing to do with football. Look up Rashford''s charity work and his activism.

It is depressing that someone like Rashford has to deal with racist abuse. The abusers are a small minority, and I hope we are moving towards the day where twitter, instagram etc get their houses in order.

I can’t believe that in 2021 we’re still witnessing this racism and still people think it’s okay. The UK is mostly made up of POC so call me naive but I thought we had come a long way as a nation
