Guest Posted July 1, 2021 Share Posted July 1, 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said Wednesday that fully vaccinated people are "safe" from the current variants and do not need to wear masks, doubling down on CDC guidance as some others call for a return to mask wearing. The question of mask wearing has come back to the forefront given recommendations from Los Angeles County health officials, and from the World Health Organization, that even fully vaccinated people should continue to wear masks indoors in public as a precaution due to the rise of the highly transmissible delta variant of the virus. But Walensky said that the CDC's guidance has not changed and that fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks, echoing other health experts who note that the vaccines are highly effective even against the delta variant. "If you are vaccinated, you are safe from the variants that are circulating here in the United States," Walensky said on NBC's "Today," adding it was "exactly right" that vaccinated people do not need to wear masks. She responded to the WHO by saying they are dealing with a worldwide situation where far fewer people are vaccinated than in the United States, given global vaccine disparities, and are therefore issuing more cautious advice. "We know that the WHO has to make guidelines and provide information to the world," she said. "Right now, we know as we look across the globe that less than 15 percent of people around the world have been vaccinated and many people of those have really only received one dose of a two-dose vaccine. I had to stop at 7 eleven to buy one since I threw mine out and the physical therapist office / medical office it's attached to requires masks still, but that's a medical building so I expect it and don't foresee that changing at all to be honest. It’s weird to me, especially since I know there are people who refuse to get the vaccine without any research of their own, but at the same time, I did mine, and I did what was right, so I’m ready to not where my mask! I was still going to wear a mask with the newest variant being such an unsure thing when I scheduled, but I’m really proud of the vaccines that were given. They are doing even better than expected, and now I have hope things like HIV/pneumonia can be vaccinated for soon! We reached 70% vaccinated for 16yr+ In the state tho! imnotyourbabe10 6,120 Posted July 1, 2021 Share Posted July 1, 2021 While I still respect and understand the science, I will still be wearing a mask in large gatherings and grocery stores. Not here for breathing in everyone's air I do get concerned, though, that people will think I'm not vaccinated or something now that the symbol of the mask has changed with these announcements. Also, I wish the US would get on board with wearing masks in general. Like during cold/flu season -- wouldn't they still help prevent spreading illnesses like that?
