Kansas sees increasing number of mountain lions, black bears and elk

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Some wildlife species that were previously absent or rare in Kansas are appearing more often now, including a mountain lion that was caught on video last month roaming through an alley in Wichita.

The mountain lion sighting continues a trend in recent decades that has brought an increased presence of wildlife, including elk, black bears, river otters and armadillos, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

Some animal populations that been reduced significantly by hunting have also gone from “very rare to very abundant” in Kansas, said Matt Peek, an Emporia-based wildlife research biologist for the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism. Those animals include wild turkey, Canada goose and deer populations.

Canada goose are a huge problem in France, I have no doubt they can prosper everywhere...

I don't know how much the pandemic mattered specifically, but most likely it played a role. They are citing 'great wildlife management' and 'protection' as reasons for all these species rebounding. And the fact that their numbers got better in the areas around Kansas so naturally they expanded there too. For armadillos, on the other hand, it's said that their numbers got better because of climate change as they can live in northen areas than they used to.

They probably run away from other places cos their initial place is not that habitable anymore, either from Urbanization or forest fires.

I don't think this is accurate, on all species at least. But they are saying that armadillos are moving north because the climate got warmer due to climate change so they can live in northen areas so on this you are right.
