For the two spirited thing I’m saying it’s a whole completely different idea and form of identity which doesn’t mess with the language.

The issue is why has “latinx” when “Latin” and “latine” are already gender neutral words. They created a third word that you not only can’t even say correctly in Spanish, but is redundant cuz gender natural terms already exist.

For me, I have bens to Mexico and to area in my hometown where there’s tribal land, my own family who is part of it, and many friends of mine who are also indigenous and Latin. They hate the word. They don’t use it and if you use it around them they’re gonna laugh. It’s not a commonly accepted word. There’s been many many polls about it from Latin Americans and even people in Latin countries who say they either never heard of the word or hate the word. Less than 5% use it and it’s dropping.

also it’s not literally gendering anything. I’m pretty sure most people, like 99% of a people, don’t look at this and say “oh that’s masculine or feminine” solely based on the word for it in a Romance language. So what you’re saying is, take out the gendered parts, completely flip an entire language that has been spoken for decades, and make everyone who knows the language relearn it? Or just one word. Because even then it creates issues with how to speak.

The issue is no one is changing it for the better. It’s not being changed to make it easier or more inclusive when there’s already inclusive terms that are in the language. It’s ridiculous. Might as well reform every other language while we’re at it right?

I see and get what you're saying. And by no means am I saying all Spanish-speaking people need to use or like the Latinx term. As you said, there are other gender neutral terms like Latin and Latine also in use.

I think at the end of the day it's up to each person and what they're comfortable to use.

Also, I'm not insinuating the entire language needs to be reordered or flipped, but that doesn't mean language isn't going to change. It does naturally and through the times based on how people use it.

I can guarantee Spanish and even English will look and perhaps even sound a lot different in 50-100 years especially with the advent of the Internet and Internet slang which I think is only speeding up this process.

I 100% agree with everything you said but the issue with Latinx is that it’s just redundant. Why create a word that has no usage other than being an alternate term for something that already exists?

its like my creating another word for “pencil” bc it doesn’t encompass pens and markers when “writing utensil” already exists. It’s like why not just use the words that are already there that describe exactly what you need.

Can someone explain what's wrong with saying "Latinx"? I am out of the loop. New day, new word that's offensive.

It was made up by American SJWs who try to be friendly to transgender Latinos, but it’s linguistically incorrect. The Spanish language is not gender-neutral like the English language is, so it makes zero sense to create a term like “Latinx” which doesn’t suit the Spanish language. It’s an American English invention.

"I know many latinos..." :bear: Americans being Americans :yennefer:

I find it pretty comical that you believe you get to speak on behalf of ALL Latinos as if they're some monolithic entity with no differing or conflicting beliefs or opinions and they all think the same thing and agree with you.

So much for not thinking you're the center of the universe and know all there is to know about your own people :bear:

“Oh yeah I know 5-6 people who use it so it’s not offensive Omg” is such a horrible example lmao. You seriously have no idea what you’re taking about.

I'm not pretending I know all there is to know or that I know what all Latinos think. But based on those who I do know, and the Latinos I have spoken with on this topic, which is not just a few, I can promise you they all don't agree or see it how you and so many of the others in here do.

Pretending it's some white American thing when there's literally other Latinos and indigenous people in this very thread conflicting with you all and that assumption is :spin:

It didn’t come from indigenous Hispanics lmao. It first came from the 70’s within the feminist movement where they crossed out masculine parts of words like womxn and latinx instead of woman and Latino.

latin and latine is literally gender neutral for every single person under the gender spectrum. There’s no gendering in those two terms at all. It makes no sense.

as someone who is both Mexican and stove American with friends who are native to Mexico and also are both indigenous Mexicans, nobody likes the term. At all.

I am also Mexican and American with indigenous friends and I know people who are for it. Y’all have to stop categorizing your personal interactions as an indicator for the whole world.
While I may have misworded that Latinx is an indigenous creation, I was referring more to the Indigenous group that uses “x” as a means of disproving that this is a “white” creation. Most TRANS latinos I know are perfectly fine with the “X” syllable.

I’m not trying to side-track from this thread but the traditionalism and pride that go hand in hand within our culture that can trickle into toxicity territory is what is at play here, I’m noticing. We still so much unlearning to do due to colonization/conquistadors

I haven't read many of the other comments but you have to give the guy a break. The consensus is that the term "Latinx" has spread mostly around America with tons of misinformation. A lot of white people think it's respectful and inclusive. We live in a society in which you get cancelled and called racist at the drop of a hat. There needs to be more information out there that (apparently) no one likes the term Latinx. He's doing the best he can.

At least he's not Trump :zilla:

And you go on and on and on and on.... I repeat, you are not even Latino, stop telling me how I should feel or not. You are very problematic to meddle in matters that do not correspond to you. There are polls, SURVEYS, thread seats, discussions, etc. where it is indicated that most Latinos do not like that word. PERIOD. The same comment applies to you: stop thinking you are the center of the universe just because you are American, now it turns out that you are going to know more about my own people than me, that I am Latino, that I live in a Latino country, that I know the facts that happen in my community and I know my language backwards and forwards. That is pathetic.

Pleaseee. You can be Latin as in a shortened version of “of Latin descent”. It’s calling having double meaning sis, it’s not hard.

Also how am I completely contradicting myself lmao. Most Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, etc don’t even know the word or despise the word. Millions of people don’t like it and the very small minority do. Let’s not change and entire language and the language structure for people who wanna create a redundant term for no reason. There’s other words to use that are inclusive already.

I do agree a lot of horrible sh!t is engrained into our culture but Latinx ain’t gonna do anything to fix that lmao. It’s something even a lot of liberal Latin people don’t like. I don’t like it and I’m DEFINITELY not a right winger lmao.

Also that GIF wasn’t really the serve you thought it was but okay.

Ma’am there’s no reason to be nasty in these comments. You’re telling me knowing people that use the term invalidates a portion of the population that don’t like the term, automatically assuming people who don’t use it “HATE” it (which I mean you’re only going by your experience of the people around you, like me), AND generalizing everyone who uses the term as “white washed”. You ALSO don’t know every latinx person in the world to assume they all hate it.  Contradicting yourself sis

Religion is a product to sell.

Then stop feeling you speak on behalf of all Latinx people, because you don't.

And those who are Latinx and in here affirming these expressions and terms demonstrate you're wrong.

It's fine if you don't desire to use them and aren't comfortable with it, never said you had to be, but you don't get to deny them or others who may choose to. That's just prejudice and only demonstrates your own bigotry against people who don't think or believe as you do.

FYI, you aren’t using the term “Latin” correctly as it refers to the classical language, not a people. our culture.

Incorrect.

"of or relating to the peoples or countries using Romance languages specifically  : of or relating to the peoples or countries of Latin America"

Oh! I stand corrected then. “Latin” would also be a good alternative!

It's not an alternative. "Latin people" and "Latinos" are two already widely used terms for people of all genders, which is what many of us have expressed in this thread numerous times.

And for example, the comments of certain American users here, who now come to tell us Latinos how we should speak our own language. They are really pathetic. Fortunately Latinos no longer lower our heads before the gringos and we defend ourselves :vegas:
