The point I was making with stating that is many indigenous cultures had three genders or recognized there was more than two genders and had terms for those. In this way, many Spanish-speaking people have reclaimed that by using terms like "Latinx" or "Latin@s" because they don't agree with your assessment that Latinos encompasses all genders and is inclusive of everyone. They see it as still gendered and defaulting to the masculine, which is the entire point for not using it for these people. Also, the whole idea stemmed from Spanish-speaking people NOT white people, and in my experience it is indigenous Spanish-speaking people who use such terms. In fact, I was first introduced to the term "Latinx" by people who were Spanish-speaking and indigenous. And their thought process and entire point was to de-gender Spanish because for many indigenous people they don't like or agree with the need to gender everything as Romance languages do. It's not inherently a bad thing to do, languages literally change all the time and evolve with the times and how the people choose to speak their language. Like literally go read up on and research linguistics, how we speak English or how Spanish spoken today is entirely different from the way they were spoken 200 or even 100 years ago, it's literally how language works The idea that we can't change a language because it's "just how it is" is just nonsense and not even true whatsoever based on actual fact, reality, and history considering all languages constantly are changing. For the two spirited thing I’m saying it’s a whole completely different idea and form of identity which doesn’t mess with the language. The issue is why has “latinx” when “Latin” and “latine” are already gender neutral words. They created a third word that you not only can’t even say correctly in Spanish, but is redundant cuz gender natural terms already exist. For me, I have bens to Mexico and to area in my hometown where there’s tribal land, my own family who is part of it, and many friends of mine who are also indigenous and Latin. They hate the word. They don’t use it and if you use it around them they’re gonna laugh. It’s not a commonly accepted word. There’s been many many polls about it from Latin Americans and even people in Latin countries who say they either never heard of the word or hate the word. Less than 5% use it and it’s dropping. also it’s not literally gendering anything. I’m pretty sure most people, like 99% of a people, don’t look at this and say “oh that’s masculine or feminine” solely based on the word for it in a Romance language. So what you’re saying is, take out the gendered parts, completely flip an entire language that has been spoken for decades, and make everyone who knows the language relearn it? Or just one word. Because even then it creates issues with how to speak. The issue is no one is changing it for the better. It’s not being changed to make it easier or more inclusive when there’s already inclusive terms that are in the language. It’s ridiculous. Might as well reform every other language while we’re at it right?

Anderson123 42,693
What a mess coming up with terms and all that stuff. Why are people offended about the word Latinx? If anything, the X is being used on some words and even non binary people because “Them” in spanish also have male and female gender. I mean none of this is official but it’s more like a slang. Anyway I’m too lazy to get into this conversation.

I repeatedly said that it seems to be an English term for English language. I stopped the discussion when another member said that this has been adopted by their Spanish speaking friends as well, as I had nothing to say about how people should speak in Spanish. I do still think that people mostly use this as an excuse to push anti inclusive agenda even if it's not you specifically. I also personally like the alternatives that have been suggested in this thread, Latin and Latine. I have fully constructed ones about the last posts but this was because you’re saying “people are tranphobic and this and this and that” which seems like an annoying low blow anyone tries to use to prevent us from talking about our language on places like Twitter. “Oh you’re just transphobic” like no sis. 99% of people don’t care about inclusivity when it comes to the term, most people are for inclusivity, but just do it within the frame of the language. Latin and latine like you said are already inclusive. Why add a word that you can’t even say in the language? It makes no sense.

I repeat and in case you didn't understand: It's latinos, not latinx, most of us latinos don't like that term with the x at the end, it's offensive. The word LATINOS already includes all sexual orientations, genders, etc. You should learn a little about Spanish grammar. And from what I read, you're not even Latino, so you shouldn't be telling us how to use our language. That's a very American attitude on your part, wanting to impose on others how to speak and how to behave. Respect other people's cultures, traditions and languages. It’s not a hard concept to use a word you already know for what it’s meant for Also the “well I know many” invalidates the millions who hate it lmao. Most people in Mexico and other countries hate it, a lot of people here hate it, it’s mainly whitewashed Latin Americans who use it and white performative activists who could care less about our struggles as POC’s but wanna change our language also using Latinx makes it hard af to talk because most of the language is gendered so you gotta do mental gymnastics to not use words that are gendered, which is like 70% of the language FYI, you aren’t using the term “Latin” correctly as it refers to the classical language, not a people. I can’t say that I appreciate you’re remarks on “only white washed” Latinx people use the term. You’re, in turn, contradicting yourself about “invalidation”. As someone who uses latinx on a day to day basis it’s not “mental gymnastics”, but I can understand how it may be an issue… min tired of people automatically referring to politically correct Latinx Americans. News flash, misogyny, machismo, gender stereotypes, racism, and homophobia are deeply engrained into our culture. Religion is a product to sell. If you want to neutralize a word, you say for example novio/novia/novie. That’s the one that’s used the most and you can actually pronounce it with no problem. For example I’ve been watching Drag Race Spain and one of the non-binary queens uses those pronouns. Ofc there’s also using the @ which has been around for a long time, but that’s for written form. I think the e at the end is a great alternative and does make sense when it comes to pronouns! Latine would be a lot easier to use in daily conversation as well as written form! Thanks for the info and the courteous response! Religion is a product to sell.

There’s other words to use that are inclusive already. I do agree a lot of horrible sh!t is engrained into our culture but Latinx ain’t gonna do anything to fix that lmao. It’s something even a lot of liberal Latin people don’t like. I don’t like it and I’m DEFINITELY not a right winger lmao. Also that GIF wasn’t really the serve you thought it was but okay.
