And inclusive, open-minded white people who wish to be sensitive to this topic have chosen to use it likewise, given how many indigenous people there are who don't believe the term "Latinos" is actually inclusive of everyone at all considering it defaults to the masculine which inherently is not inclusive. If indigenous people want to be called that I’m all for it. I am Latino. I speak Spanish and don’t have an issue with it. But I simply will not use the term on everyone. I don’t think you guys see how we are not being ill intentioned by simply speaking a language as it is.

I just use latino because that's basically used as "they". All latin languages default to the masculine words afaik (like in English we refer to groups of people as "guys", it's the same thing and it doesn't mean you're referring to everyone in that group as literal men). I only wish for you and others to be aware of why it is used, and acknowledge the atrocities and damage Spanish as a colonizer language has done to indigenous peoples across the Americas, in many cases whose cultures had multiple genders or gender neutral or "two-spirited" people and terms. At the end of the day, it's each person's choice to use which terms are comfortable for them. I just don't think people, Spanish speaking people in particular who don't understand or are aware of their own language's history, should be disparaging this usage or term or those who wish to use it. Some wanted to say that Latino was the male version since the term Latina exists for female. But i think like the word Mankind is gender neutral. But since the people who are from this community don't seem to want Latinx, I say.... Latino??...Latinx? And then I go like this: Omg I get it now. So Latin =/= Latino and LatinO is like saying HIM, same way LatinA is HER. So that's why LatinX exists (in this case THEY/THEM) . Finally, lightbulb moment! Right, I do not disagree at all with how Spanish impacted indigenous cultures. But the thing about many of us is: We are direct products of colonialism. We are a mixture of European, indigenous, and African descent. We created our own ethnicity and culture. It is ours and it is special. I identify as Latino because my family is from a Latin American country and we are a beautiful result of unfortunate evil. If we want to be called something else, WE will decide so. Especially in the US where our needs are often met with racism and bigotry, I do not want my identity to be changed by others.

X makes absolutely no sense at the end of a word in Spanish. Anglicizing the Spanish language is not the solution. Just more colonizing by supposedly woke Americans. It seems to me like that's the take the conservative people will use to push the agenda that English language having its own non gendered term is somehow going to destroy the Spanish language or the cultures of latinx people. It's not uncommon for different languages to have their own words for places and people, some of those words are borrowed. People only seem to have a problem with 'latinx' because they don't want to be associated with what it politically means to use that word.

Joe Biden using 'latinx' in his speech isn't an attempt to force you to change the way you speak in Spanish. You think it's forced upon you by the westerners with complete disregard to those Latin American people that it's trying to include. As far as I'm aware it's simply an English term. Every time inclusivity is being brought up, regardless of what it is, this same argument arises, people think it will somehow destroy the society. I and others had a good discussion about this in this thread which I invite you to read.
ProfessionalClown 10,647
This is so cringe. The amount of us latin people in the replies saying “DONT USE THAT WORD” should be enough.

Thanks, I acknowledge my biases are influencing my opinion as I have not heard Latin people around me use this term and have only heard non-Latin people using it. I am certainly not here to make anyone’s life more difficult than it is and will respect if someone wants to be called Latinx if they express it. The issue is Latin is already an inclusive term, so is “latine” which has been used in multiple countries “not all”. if you wanna be real, “latinx” is only a work that will be used in the US, nowhere else. Lady Adga 8,664
For those who ask, yes, the word Latinx is offensive to us Latinos, it is a silly term and they should stop using it. It has already been said countless times that most of us don't like it.
