Spanish-speaking people got tired of how gendered their language is and wanted to make the language more gender neutral, so Latinx got introduced for that reason. But other terms such as Latin@s or using the neutral e also are used to indicate the same thing since the x doesn't make a lot of sense or in use much in Spanish. Secondly, regardless of what your opinion is, "Latinos" defaults to the masculine, just as if it were a group of all women it would be "Latinas". Bottom line is defaulting to the masculine is tantamount to patriarchy or white supremacy given the default and assumption in US society, and historically Spanish society too where Spanish originated, is always male and white. Spanish originated from a white, male society that was misogynist and racist, and yet here you are defending that history apparently because that's just the way it is, when this is seeking to address that history and make it more inclusive and open to all human beings rather than Spanish society at that time. Addressing and acknowledging a culture's and language's history is not "anglicizing" it, especially when it's speakers of the language itself seeking to address their language's sexist, patriarchal history. You'd think someone such as yourself would be aware of these issues and not so ignorant about this usage and the reasoning behind it, so color me surprised. OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS RESPONSE!!! spanish speaker here and I agree with everything you said!

Helxig 45,337
It's always so strange to me that America's leader is always some geriatric man. I can't imagine having some feeble 70-something old man leading our country, it just feels weird I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin. Our nation will never progress until we put a hard age limit on who can hold political office. No one over 70 should be in any political position of power, ever. enissa11 2,984
i'm latin american and there is nothing wrong with "latinx", all the trans, non-binary ppl and allies i know use that or "latine" too "Latin" doesn't work because it is an adjetive in english and it might be confused with the language. All the attempts to be more inclusive are good, it's not offensive at all. well maybe for the narrow minded people... Mad Architect of Light
Ayesha Erotica 1,924
1. The term Latinx sounds artificial like a username or corporation brand name, not like a name for people 2. The term Latinx is not used in the Hispanic world and sounds alienating 3. Biden Biden comment about Latinos sounds like it was made by Donald trump. The majority of Latinos in the US is legal and can't be deported. His comment shows that he thinks that Latinos are illegal here... 4. And Biden . Latinos have human rights as well. Don't force them to get vaccinated, this is a violation of human rights considering unknown long-term side effects. Like if you’re talking about a group of girls you say las niñas, but if they’re a group of girls and boys you say los niños right? Surprised people aren’t using NiñXs. I tried to do some research on it, but don’t really understand it. It's not offensive, just divisive because it's new. A lot of people prefer to stick to the already gender neutral "latinos" (I'm part of that group ), some use "latine" because it's already been established as an even more gender neutral term, others prefer this new term "latinx" for whatever reason. It's just about preference tbh. I think people on both ends of this debate are getting too het up over nothing though how did a debate over a suffix turn into a full blown racially charge conversation about colonialism and transphobia? 2 hours ago, Morphine Prince said: Surprised people aren’t using NiñXs.
