Latino is gender neutral anyway right? Like if you’re talking about a group of girls you say las niñas, but if they’re a group of girls and boys you say los niños right? And Paula Abdul ain’t got [BLEEP] on me!

CautiousLurker 19,709
I read all 10 pages of this thread and I can confidently say now that I have no idea what's going on, all I can tell is people feel very strongly about terms... From what I gathered, 'person of latin descent' is the safest option? Is that fine to say or is it still bad/wrong? It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke! The original is already all inclusive of everyone in the LGBTQ+ community but everyone feels to need to want to create or modify their own… Yesssss. And now, which flag or group name you choose becomes a measure of how “woke” you are and used for judgment and divisiveness among the community. It’s counter to the goal. It’s not like people get to vote on these things and come to a somewhat collective opinion. Or that the groups in question are even consulted most of the time. A small group of SJWs (usually not even the subject of the movement) starts pushing it on everyone and calling you a bigot if you don’t use it. I have heard nothing but disapproval of the term from the Latin community I know, as well as a highly negative response from native speakers on every forum I read (including this one). Should someone I know and interact with tell me personally that they prefer Latinx as their adjective, I will more than happily accommodate. It just hasn’t happened yet…

It came from the feminist movement in the 70’s where they would cross out masculine terms with x like womxn and Latinx. Ok people need to stop spreading the misinformation that is somehow anticolonial or indigenous in origin. It’s made up justification because the idea that it’s the will of indigenous elders sounds nice. Also, I’m pretty sure even Spanish speaking countries use Latine NOT Latinx. I am certainly not here to make anyone’s life more difficult than it is and will respect if someone wants to be called Latinx if they express it. I haven't gotten through the rest of the thread yet, and it may be addressed later, but I didn't wanna lose the thought. Is it possible that Latinx is the way that cultures with gender neutral vocabulary try and understand or put their own nuance to another culture? Basically, like, Latinx isn't a word to be used by the people and/or culture it's speaking about, but rather, its a word specifically used by outsiders of the culture. Kinda like how, in English, we call countries by anglicized names such as Germany or Japan instead of Deutschland or Nihon/Nippon, respectively. (And those are just immediate examples that come to mind, I know it's not a 1-to-1 equivalent.) In that perspective, it makes sense that non-Latin people would want a word that expresses that nuance. Latino has a masculine connotation, and Latin Person is a mouthful. Ironically, it doesn't matter what the connotation is in Latin culture, because its being used in an Anglican culture. After the word was borrowed into English, it becomes an English word, despite its origin, and thus is susceptible to transformation by that culture's linguistics. Kinda like how "animation" was borrowed by Japanese to "animeshon" and then shortened to "anime", which is seen as a Japanese word. Of course, I realize it's different since the word in question is specifically the demonym of the culture itself, so its a bit more, for lack of a better term, sacred; but it's still be subject to the same ideas of linguistics. That's not to say it can't be seen as disrespectful to the culture, even if its to be more inclusive of nonbinary identities. But then that raises different questions like "should it be seen as disrespectful?" and "is it really disrespectful?"
sarahb 17,188
I have zero dog in this fight, but am I the only one that hates this term mainly because it just sounds ugly? It reminds me of a corporation, like SpaceX Do you feel him sir?

weed 78,937
It took me a while to get into it but I support the word, language evolves literally every day. At some point, any word you can think of didn't exist!

X makes absolutely no sense at the end of a word in Spanish. Anglicizing the Spanish language is not the solution. Just more colonizing by supposedly woke Americans. please stop trying tu educate people. Non binary latinos use latine here in México bc latino is not gender neutral.
