Well, lots of those football fans are homophobic, even lots of the athletes too.

As for Mexico, not surprised. Their culture are ingrained in machismo and Catholicism. Surely we haven't forgot with that one GGD user who tried so hard to justify his internal homophobia regardless what all the other members said trying to encourage and  comfort him to be in his own skin? IDK where he is now, but I hope he is making peace with himself now or in the process to.

It could be. I think it's best not to say it, it's an offensive word at the end of the day for a homosexual person. I, for example, when I hear someone playing that song (the one I put above) at full volume I feel very uncomfortable, now imagine if I listen to it while I am accompanied by my family, or someone who knows I am gay. That's why I'm glad FIFA has taken drastic measures against that word, let's see if they learn their lesson. That said, I doubt they will stop using that word in daily life, speaking with insulting words is something deeply rooted in the culture of this country.

Wait, it was putø? I’ve never heard/known it be used as a homophobic slur. Learn something new everyday. 
I was thinking it was gonna be jøtø or maricøn. Now those are painful as hell to hear, especially maricøn.

Well, now you have learned that this word is also used to insult homosexuals in México, although less used than using "ma**ca o ma**cón" (words used even between young boys, to call each other, instead of saying the name). But I agree with what you say, in other countries it does not have the same meaning, as in the tweets where they explain that in Spain it has nothing to do with referring to a homosexual.

 No, puto is also used as a gay slur. And maricon isn’t the only one that exists either, there are tons of gay slurs in Spanish and variations in every country.
