"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the Mexican Federation with a fine of 60,000 Swiss francs and the condition that they play their next two official home games behind closed doors as a consequence of the anti-gay chants heard in the matches against the Dominican Republic and the United States, played in Guadalajara on March 18 and 24, respectively," the FIFA statement said."

"According to FIFA's statutes on discrimination, more severe punishments may be given for future breaches in order to stamp out the behavior. Those include Mexico being banned entirely from any tournament under FIFA's purview, including the World Cup itself."

Nice to see this action take place. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how much they are punished, homophobic people will never learn. They'd rather die than change their ways :ohwell:

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

I am glad. Here in Mexico there is a lot of homophobia, even though there are laws against discrimination (supposedly), gay weddings are legal in several states, etc. but there are still a lot of homophobic people and you even see little kids saying homophobic insults and parents don't tell them anything or rather encourage them to say them. There is a song in this country called P**O by Molotov (very explicit, which actually incites violence against gays) and many times they play it at parties where there are children and everyone sings it very vehemently. It's disgusting.

I wonder what word they used

They chant: "EHHHH P*TO!!!!!!" At the top of their lungs. The word was even heard on live broadcasts on national TV and many children watch soccer and repeat the word. Some parents don't even scold them and just laugh because they think it's funny.

I went to a Mexico vs. Costa Rica game a few years ago and it was an amazing experience except for this chant and other vulgar chants.

The Mexican fans also threw trash on some Costa Rica fans.

Mexican soccer fans are some of the most disgusting people I’ve ever seen. It’s a shame cause Mexico’s team and its games are usually very exciting.

I decided never to attend a game where Mexico is playing because of the large amount of disgusting fans I saw.

It is something complex because many say that it has no homophobic connotation, that word is even used informally among friends. It is also used to refer to someone who is a coward, who does not dare to do something. "Don't be p*to", and many don't do it with the eagerness to be homophobic. However, that word is also used to insult a gay man and for many it can be very offensive and even painful, depending on the intention you give to the word. Here in Mexico it is very very common to use words with homophobic connotations to interact in a "fun" way with friends. Everything always depends on the intention. As I wrote in my previous comment, there is a song called "P*TO by Molotov (I invite you to listen to it, even if you don't understand Spanish) that repeats that word in a very aggressive intonation and even incites violence against gays by saying (hit the fa****), BUT here they also say that it is not a song that refers per se to homosexuals. Since the word mar*cón as well as p*to is not always used to insult a homosexual, but a cowardly, bad person, etc...

P*to defenders always DIE on the hill that it isn’t homophobic but that’s the word many gay men hear while they’re getting beat up and murdered so they can save their lame excuses.

A lot of terms in Spanish take different meanings depending on if they're said in Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, etc. Especially insults, some terms will get you laughed at in Cuba but stabbed in Puerto Rico :messga:

It's just weird though  my step mom and her entire family are Mexican, I've never heard "puto" have any other meaning besides being the masculine form of the word for "bitch" :laughga:
