Sen. Bernie Sanders, chair of the Senate Budget Committee, drafted a $6 trillion infrastructure package that Senate Democrats are considering approving without GOP support, per two people familiar with the matter. The sources, who described it as an early blueprint, were granted anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

The figure mirrors the significant level of spending that President Joe Biden laid out in his annual budget last month. But the Vermont senator is pushing for aggressive federal action to overhaul the economy. Politico first reported details about the blueprint.

"We have an enormous amount of work in front of us," Sanders said on Thursday after leaving a key budget meeting with Senate Democrats on Capitol Hill. He ticked off areas for federal intervention — climate change, affordable housing and an urgency to level the playing field for average families.

Sanders said that Democratic efforts to approve a party-line bill in reconciliation would commence within weeks: "We expect to have a whole lot done in July."

A spokesperson for the Senate Budget Committee declined to comment. But Sanders later told reporters he is seeking that amount of spending. "The bottom line here is this country faces crises.. working families are struggling and it's about time we paid attention to their needs," he said.

This is over many many years, not just a single drop of cash as well, and many estimates by civil engineers say we'll need at least this to keep things where they are, not just new infrastructure!

Let’s not have our eyes pop at the number yall - Infrastructure is an investment. Wherever new roads go, way more businesses will follow. It essentially pays for itself. Joe Biden’s notion of “paying for it” is cute, but kinda silly and another right wing troll attempt to get him to fail as president…

I hope it pulls thru but Joe Manchin is evil so :messga:

His notion of paying for it is to undo the tax breaks Republicans gave Bezos and other 1%-ers 3 years ago. Yes, you don't have to have stuff like this "paid for" but it also brings our budget gap smaller too, which is good.

The reality is that deficit spending does not necessarily mean a bad thing depending on the velocity in which the spending occurs and the way it is spent. Too many people look at public policy and public spending as the same as their own bank accounts and it simply doesn't work that way. It's definitely agreed that you do not want to do too much deficit spending because of the various effects that can have (inflation, currency rates, etc) but the 1990's notion that a government has to have a balanced budget is just an excuse for the government not to fulfil its obligation to the people and instead pledge allegiance to the special interests and billionaires that essentially buy them out.
