I do think people made a lot of shocking comments in the early days of twitter and Facebook to get likes though. It was a different time abd we didn't understand the lasting consequence our social media would have. I'm sure I have old comments that would reflect very poorly on me too, but I definitely have never made overtly racist or homophobic slurs bc it's just not in my vocabulary even to say as a "joke" or for shock value. Did anybody listen to the first episode of Bari Weiss's new podcast? It deals with the fallout of old tweets coming back to haunt a girl/family. I don't really think people deserve to have their lives ruined over it, but it will always be jarring to read ugly comments like that. And yeahhhh... I do think sometimes social media overreacts and turns something offensive into "can never be redeemed" level offensive...but this is not one of those times.
