As Gaga works on an album she obviously has hopes for different songs. When she was working on MANiCURE at the time she probably thought it was lead single worthy, there's obviously different versions of it, the album version could be very different from what it sounded like when she wanted it as lead. And remember in one of the first ARTPOP interview she said she played the album for Jimmy and after almost every song he said it should be lead but eventually when he heard Applause he said it's "the one".
