Kadikaado 4,302
Hello hello hello, I know there's a Rupaul's Drag Race topic here, but I wanted to open a place to discuss how unfair the contracts are to the queens. In this series of videos we can see how expensive it is to participate in Drag Race and how much people are profiting from it. The amount of money they demand the queens to invest x the amount of money the show awards them is ridiculous. https://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-celebrities/ru-paul-net-worth/ I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes. Kadikaado 4,302
I mean, it's ridiculous to expect dragqueens spend tens of thousands of dollars in drag and not paying them at least wardrobe. I remember when the pandemic started a queen complained that she was suposed to tour with the show and couldn't even get back the money she invested on her tour outfits. $1k per show on an official tour? That's ridiculous! I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.
Mister Gaga 22,034
While i get what he's saying, we haven't seen (if i'm not mistaken) any queen, sans Tyra Sanchez, regretting her presence on the show. As of today, there are more than 200 queens who have participated on the show and even Willam, who's usually very critical and unafraid to speak up, still praises RuPaul. RAMROD 104,293
They can always say no if it is too expensive, esp newer queens who mostly know someone or three who had been there, but they didn't and majority get a bigger return cos of it from the fame being on the show (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚐𝚝𝚑 𝚝𝚘 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚊𝚕𝚘𝚗𝚎 (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡
littlepotter 74,474
The contract definitely sounds ridiculous and borderline scary but you shouldn't confuse what's on paper with what happens in real life. If the contract was that nightmarish the best drag queens wouldn't be clamoring to get on the show. chaeri pls
Debithius 5,484
Let's be clear, they don't demand you to spend anything, you can show up in cheap drag and still win but the standard has been raised so they just expect more.
weed 71,072
The only thing I wish is that the show gave each queen a budget for the wardrobe or they *only* required looks that were going to be used (instead of asking for looks for 30 potential themes, only using 12). Also the exclusivity is a bit much.
pynkri 77
I think RPDR needs to show more respect to queens and support them financially but in the end there is a contract and the participants are accepting these conditions so idk

You have to go to DragCon, every day in a different outfit and they pay you $1,000, but they want you to pay for your booth, electricity and internet. The contract is very strict and if they want to, they can sue you for almost anything. Every little thing you make they own a slice off of it. They can force you back in new season etc. etc. etc. I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.

If it was, then you Electra Shock wouldn't even be in this competition for 5 episodes now.
ballerios 569
the thing is .. the most important thing that happens with drag race is.. they giving them a platform a platform is the biggest force .. without any platform as big as drag race the drag queens just probably only known in their hometown NOT THE SOCIAL MEDIA queen tho lol its their responsibility if you want to make it a bigger thing or just stay in your lane ... its your choice too to make expensive costume .. they don't demand anything at least you look frickin good the money they give to you its small but ofc its a contract and that's why the queens make merch so they can get more profit from them and that's why we need to support them by buying their merch
SpadesToStart 2,614
It’s exploitative. World of Wonder is owned and run by queer people, and we should be treating our own better than this.

Tamisha Iman even brought to discussion the fact that production took pictures of every look they had before the competition, that can only mean they will give more chances to people with the better looks. Unless they are sh1tstirrers. But it's not just about money, talking about Tamisha her Youtube channel received a strike for posting her performance, she payed for that was used in the reunion episode, if you read the contract they own everything you make from RPDR. If they wanna scr3w you, they will. I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.
Biagio2103 5,400
Let's keep in mind that knowing that some queens may not have the wardrobe, they always have fabrics and wigs available for them. Monique was the perfect example, she always made outfits at the last minute using material the shows provides (I mean hello, Rupaul is constantly saying "you can use fabric from the wall" after announcing every challenge). The only thing the queens are "forced" to take to the show are accessories and make-up. Though I think the cash prize is not as much as it should considering the show's popularity and syndication, the queens get some serious exposure and a lot of gigs after appearing on the show, so even without winning, they can have good careers (and Willam agrees). Edit: also, most queens have sponsors with designers, so they don't pay for the outfits with the condition that they have to wear it, it's a win-win situation for queens and designers alike (see Vanjie for example). I'm only good at being bad

The thing is producers are profiting a lot from it while many queens end up with huge debts. Some take a mortgage on their houses because they know if they have nicer, more expensive looks the probability of they surviving longer in the competition a.k.a. getting more exposure a.k.a. more fans and also more chances something they said going viral and by that getting famous. Some people have an advantage by knowing how to sew, but even so they give you between 45/30 days to get those clothes ready. And it's a huge job to make those clothes, especially when you have to work 3 jobs at the same time. I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.
