Apple wants staff to return to office by September

Apple wants its employees to return to offices by September, a company-wide memo sent to staff on Wednesday said.

Workers must return to their desks for at least three days a week, chief executive Tim Cook wrote. Some staff members will be given the option to work the remaining two days remotely.

Teams that require "in-person" work will return for four or five days.

Apple also told staff they will be able to apply for the chance to work remotely for two weeks a year.

However, managers will need to approve remote work requests.

I've been saying since day 1 that the 'new normal' was fake news when it came to post-COVID pandemic ways of working. Too many micro-managers justifying their job roles and old-timers who refuse to modernize. In the article Tim Apple writes that being in office will let people work more collaboratively– I wonder how many jobs at Apple actually involve genuine collaborative working on a daily basis.

If covid proved anything, it's that offices are incredibly useless for MANY  jobs and that work from home is a much better alternative. So many workers can do their job perfectly from home without having to commute to their office, sit in chairs, and stare at their tasks all day with 1 hour of lunch break or whatever time they get. It's much more relaxing and healthy to stay at home, get work done, then move on with your day once it's over. Not to mention the horrible traffic jams and time wasted on the road and whatnot. We can't claim to want to modernize the world and then refuse the most basic elements of "modernity" like working outside suffocating offices.

Yeah this kind of thinking is total bullshit. There's no reason to have in person work 3 days a week for everyone. Companies that actually understand what they are doing and offer permanent remote work will see a ton of people applying to their jobs and places that move back to offices will lose 40% of their under 40 employees according to research I saw in an article. I'm already looking for other jobs myself bc my workplace is doing this.

There are some jobs that need to be in person, unfortunately, even in office-work. I do think there are still many, many prominent companies bolstering working from home policies/allowances. I don't think it's fake news or will fade away.

Yup, I get that there are some benefits of working in office but every single day? No ma'am. I only plan on going into office when it is genuinely needed and where a Zoom call won't replicate the same standard of teamwork

My job was strictly an in-person operation before the pandemic. Now, I have the option of working remotely two days a week. It’s kind of nice.

For a lot of people workplace is the only place where they have social interaction, working from home can also be incredibly unhealthy so the best is to have the choice

But ofc office work will come back 

Even if you work on your computer 24/7, you're usually more productive if you go to the physical place. Besides no one has such great internet that it allows for it to not be an hindrance. It can be so frustrating and annoying

But this depends heavily on your task. If it's the kind of work you login to talk with clients and basically use that program, or don't know, something like data charts

But even then, the bother that is when you need to call a superior etc. Can be such a hassle at working remotely

Yeah that's a good point, but forcing everyone to go there for at least 3 days is just not it. I would probably go when necessary if needed, but other than that what's the point tbh

This is a really great solution! I see this being a tendency in last 5 years, even in public services.

I've experienced less issues with Internet WFH for the past year than I've had working in the office. BUT on the flipside, office working is probably a superior choice for those working in rural/remote areas where connection isn't great. This should be an employee-led decision.

The company I work for is actually remodeling most of it's offices to be more spacious, and giving employees the option to choose where/when to work, permanently.

Before COVID, we had a pretty large remote workforce, though, we're a global brand
