How do you interpret Shallow’s chorus?

I still don’t get what Shallow’s chorus is about :rip: Can someone explain?

I’m off the deep end

Watch as I dive in

I’ll never meet the ground

Crash through the surface

Where they can’t hurt us

We’re far from the shallow now

I think the “shallow” is the ordinary, unproductive, (self)hurtful things, environments, people and thoughts. So when they meet, gaga and cooper, they are far from that place, that void

In an earlier draft of the ASIB script Jackson Maine was going to die via drowning instead of the way he ended up dying in the final movie. I think that Shallow may have been written as an end credit song before the script was changed. So the song would have played right after Jackson drowned.

I believe the chorus is using ocean/drowning imagery because the song was written about his death (I've always felt that the song is really about suicide). It became a love song when it was later re-contextualized in the movie. That's the impression I get from it anyway.

Wasn't it like a reference that they're far from superficial and "shallow" things in life? :laughga: idk

I think it's about falling in love. Taking the leap of faith to trust someone, it can be scary.

Yeah, it's a pretty direct metaphor comparing falling in love to jumping into deep water.

The only lyric that doesn't fit that is "I'll never meet the ground" but maybe the ground is the shore? and you have to pass through the shallows to get to the shore :selena: so since you're...far from the shallow(s) you'll never meet the ground :bear:

She wants Jackson's bad romance, basically :ally: and his country music star d :ally:

hmm maybe she means it as in like “coming down to earth”, she’s just floating on cloud 9. Never coming down.
