From a climate change point of view, Alaska suffers the same consequences whether it's drilled in Alaska or Saudi Arabia. I see that there are other factors, especially those that affect native people - but that happens pretty much anywhere on Earth and Alaska has a low population density and a population where a majority want this. idk, refrigerating the ground probably uses a lot of energy that wouldn't be used somewhere else lol. Just sounds ridiculous to do. I'd rather they not drill but I'm also not an economist or have a grip on the energy industry and I still need gas prices to be reasonable to get to work. so idk. There's probably a place to drill that's less ridiculous. Call your therapist...it's Petie Estie
JusKeepBreathin 19,311
Can all the people that can afford a $35k Nissan leaf please raise their hands. Hello we still need oil to power our cars until we have a majority of electrical vehicles on the street and even if we could all buy an electrical car tomorrow there just aren't enough. We closed the Keystone and at least this is our own oil supply. We aren't putting money into a middle eastern country's pocket. I don't like the idea of drilling, it sucks. But we can't all start horseback riding to work tomorrow. Moving from gas to electric is going to take time. And that if democrats stay in power. If republicans get power it will take much much longer and we will have both this project and the keystone open. I have no idea how extensive the cooling is, but it may have the benefit of keeping near surface level methane gas from being released. I don't know, but sometimes things aren't as clear cut as we'd like. High gas prices increase demand for green energy. So if you're in favor of low gas prices, and can't name a better place to drill then are you really that opposed? Where did he promise to stop drilling or this particular project? And i'm curious if you can name an ideal location for oil to come from while we move to renewable energy. So if you're in favor of low gas prices, and can't name a better place to drill then are you really that opposed? the entire concept of the green new deal is a transition to green energy without causing more burdens on the most vulnerable people. That would include not raising gas prices on people who cannot afford an electric car...or people who cannot have an electric car until their landlord installs a plugin spot. We need an infrastructure bill with billions of dollars to build chargers at every apartment building, home, rest stop, and gas station in america. As well as incentives to buy an electric car. Even if that is passed, it will be many years before it's all in place and the car market produces vehicles for everyone. Until then, yes we need oil to keep prices low so that people can get to work. Otherwise you'll have riots like France had. You can't place the burden on the poorest communities. Also I forgot to add....I think it's pretty naive to assume that there isn't a better place to drill for oil lol. That's all I have to say on that.
