I'm not defending the project, but this isn't a broken promise.  Pivoting away from fossil fuels is not stopping using fossil fuels immediately.  The majority of Americans want the USA to be energy independent at the cost of drilling on US soil.

Not approving a project is not the same as stopping a project already in motion.  Biden committed to not stopping fracking, even.

Yeah, it sucks, but it's not a broken promise, in fact drilling the in US was a guarantee in his platform.  Since the damage is done regardless of where it happens (some are more environmentally devastating than others) it might as well happen in the Red States that have voters demanding it.

Regardless of if this is hypocritical or not, it's a bad project. If they want to drill they should do it somewhere else.

Where is a good place to drill?  From a climate change point of view, Alaska suffers the same consequences whether it's drilled in Alaska or Saudi Arabia.  

I see that there are other factors, especially those that affect native people - but that happens pretty much anywhere on Earth and Alaska has a low population density and a population where a majority want this.
