PartySick 172,545
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took a swipe at Big Tech on Monday as he signed a hot-button state bill targeting how digital platforms moderate online content. The legislation marks one of the biggest steps yet by a Republican governor to act on allegations of online censorship at the hands of companies such as Facebook (FB), Google and Twitter (TWTR). But tech industry critics say the legislation is unconstitutional, setting the stage for a court battle over the law. In public remarks on Monday, DeSantis blamed a "council of censors" in Silicon Valley for shutting down debate over Covid-19 lockdowns and the origins of the coronavirus. "I would say those lockdowns have ruined millions of people's lives all around this country," DeSantis said. "Wouldn't it have been good to have a full debate on that in our public square? But that was not what Silicon Valley wanted to do." The bill DeSantis signed prohibits tech platforms from suspending or banning political candidates in the state, with possible fines of $250,000 per day if the de-platformed candidate is seeking statewide office and $25,000 per day if the candidate is running for a non-statewide office. The legislation also gives Florida residents the ability to sue tech companies for de-platforming. Similar bills have also been considered in states such as Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Utah. http://rss.cnn.com/~r/rss/cnn_tech/~3/hFaJAuY_I2M/index.html Whimsical bitch
PartySick 172,545
Free market who? It was all good when bakeries refused to serve gay customers or when places of business turn away black customers but private companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google fighting against misinformation and not allowing loony alt-right rhetoric on their privately owned platforms? That's gone too far I wonder if this means Florida residents can sue GGD if we ban them it definitely means Trump will get his Twitter and FB back, at least in Florida, if he runs again. There's no way this is holding up in court. Whimsical bitch

skaxboy 6,927
Freedom of speech does not guarantee freedom of reach. No tech company can keep you from your ideology. If the website is free, then they can technically delete whatever they want from the servers they pay for, IMO. I used to love Tumblr but stopped using once they restricted content but I wasn’t paying a membership or anything. These conservatives states should just use Parler or whatever other nonsensical Twitter clone is available for their clownery.

bionic 50,111
The Republicans know bills like this are unconstitutional, they do it because the signing is what makes the press- the Supreme Court defeat won't be reported on so much. Its pure grandstanding.
HuffsAhoy 7,433
Darn, if only I still lived there I would definitely sue Twitter for banning me last year You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.
