Not that there will be no security presence at all. "Heritage of Pride said it plans to shift first response and security to trained private security and provide volunteers with de-escalation training. "NYPD will provide first response and security only when absolutely necessary as mandated by city officials," the organization said. It also plans to keep police officers at least one city block from the event perimeter areas "where possible." Toronto put this policy in place a few years ago, and I'm all for it. But some comments that implied anti police phylosophy triggered the conversation to go that way. I live in WeHo and the cops here are VERY pro gay. Or they act like they are. One reason why? We always have a blast with them during Pride and that sets up a more friendly relationship throughout the rest of the year. Pride was one of those rare moments when two groups that are often at odds - cops and LGBT - can come together. They feel a part of our community and vice versa. By cutting them out? It might just establish a more Us v Them dynamic. But that's just my take. Maybe I'm wrong... (Also, the hired hands that they're adding for extra security? Thats a start. But ive still yet to see a detailed realistic plan, with logistics etc put forward. Where I love the militia is still weak, but in the city of Rio de Janeiro (1 and a half hour driving a car from here) the militia controls everything and things are insane. At the same time, making it not as intense for the people who have been traumatized by police actions towards them or their communities. I like this idea and think it might help.
