In all honesty and Gaga aside and your faves aside, is payola ethically correct to you?

It's against the law actually, at least in the USA.

Payola, also known as pay-for-play, is the illegal practice of paying commercial radio stations to broadcast particular recordings without disclosure to listeners of the pay-for-play, at the time of the broadcast. The Communications Act of 1934, as amended, prohibits payola.

Mmm idk i mean is not ethic obviously but we all know that to like a song we have to listen to it and how we are gonna listen to it if it doesnt sound in the radio? GP does not follow artists like we do, if they see posters of an artist's new material they will not look for it in their majority, on the other hand, if you put the song in their ears, you can win one more fan

Quizás bastaba respirar, sólo respirar, muy lento...💙

It’s wrong. But payola won’t always translate into success because ultimately the general public is who decides if your song is a hit or not.

But that can easily be maneuvered and for all we know the GP is only consuming what record companies are payoling. As @RAMROD said it is illegal in the USA so it don't know how it is not being watched over by the feds (lack of interest or they are being paid too?)

It's unethical because it takes any chance real indie (independent) artists of getting any airplay. We know many labels pay for airplay for their artists

Spoiler

Dua Lipa, Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran

, so I wonder how can we make it fair to everyone...

I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.

This. There's gotta be a way that artists can fairly compete without having big record companies taking over by payoling their way up to the top.

How many good artists are being left unseen/unheard because of payola? For all we know there could be performers/singers that are 100x better than Dua, Ariana, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Bieber but we don't have access to their talents because they are being burried by payola'd artists.

The music industry, as every other industry, is a slave to capitalism. The bigger the money, the bigger the power. It will always be this way, unfortunately.

Everything could be everything (it could mean anything)

One thing is TikTok is giving a break to many artists. Many unknown singers became well known because of TikTok.

But top Tik Tokers can also be easily manipulated or paid to create videos promoting payola'd artists. I think that Tik Tok is not a good social media (in terms of how it affects negatively society) but I do think that it can also help and it's been proven that it helps boost the popularity of songs. I just don't know if we can truly believe that top creators in the app aren't being paid to do so as well as radio stations.

You guys realize Gaga needed payola for some of her songs? Radio was very reluctant to play her during ARTPOP and Joanne.

Applause and RoM were radio hits because her label paid for them to get played at the top of the hour on release day. And after that Applause legit struggled to get played for a bit.
